FL. State sweep finds 1,251 ineligible voters

    FORT MYERS, FL -
An NBC2 investigation into voter fraud has compelled the state to dig deep into its voter registration rolls. Florida election supervisors are working to remove 1,251 potential non-U.S. citizens from its databases before the November election.

The Division of Elections discovered the names after Florida's Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles identified non-citizens who obtained drivers licenses. It then matched those names with people registered to vote in Florida, finding 1,251.

Up until a few years ago, residents didn't have to show proof of citizenship when registering to vote at the DMV. Now, the state is doing everything in its power to try to identify them.

"We mailed them a letter, which they have 30 days in which to respond," said Collier County Election Supervisor Jennifer Edwards, talking about the 27 potential voters her office is investigating.

Election supervisors, like Edwards, must now remove them from the voter roll or verify their citizenship.
"The difference between Bush and Gore in 2000 in Florida was 537 votes. So, it's very important," said Edwards.

While the state didn't know how many of them actually voted in elections, they did confirm some of them did.

In February, the NBC2 Investigators first exposed non-citizens registered to vote while reviewing jury excusal information in Lee and Collier counties. The state expanded our methodology, finding 12 times the number of non-citizens statewide that shouldn't be registered.

NBC2 contacted some of the non-citizens over the phone who claimed they had no idea how they were registered. One included a Canadian who lives part of the year in Sarasota County.

Another person, who didn't identify her nationality, said she "knows non-citizens are not allowed to vote," and has no idea how she ended up registered.

"This is big mess," said Beth Colvin, an organizer with the Sarasota Patriots. The conservative group says this is why Floridians should be concerned with the upcoming election.

"I find it a tragedy. Our votes are absolutely diluted," said Colvin.

"Accuracy and confidence in our polling and our voting lists are very, very important," contends Ken Detzner, Florida's newly appointed Secretary of State.

Detzner says the findings show his office is proactively identifying new ways to remove non-citizens from the voter roll.

He expects Florida's voter registration database will be ready by November. "I'm very confident they will be accurate in November. I am, yes," said Detzner.

In some cases, non-citizens were likely accidently registered at the DMV when they showed up to get a license. In other cases, they were lying on voter registration forms. Those who do that could face felony charges.

Detzner is asking for access to a federal citizenship verification system. He plans to meet with Department of Homeland Security officials in Washington soon.

Don't reward the criminal actions of millions of illegal aliens by giving them citizenship.

A bigger problem isn't those registered who admit they are not citizens but the fact that when registering its simply asked if you are a citizen or not without requiring proof that you are eligible. Florida likely has 20x the number found voting who shouldn't be.
