U.S. Border Patrol authorities report 12 people are in custody at 9 a.m. after a boat full of suspected illegal immigrants came ashore near Manalapan early this morning, said agency spokeswoman Elee Erice. Authorities have also seized the boat believed to have brought them here, she said.

Early accounts indicate the people came ashore about 2 a.m. Those in custody are all adults and are from various countries, Erice said. Reports this morning indicated they came from Ecuador, Colombia and Haiti.

Thursday was the first morning that storms didn’t pummel the coast this week.

This reported landing is the first in Palm Beach County this month, but follows two instances in late August. On Aug. 28, federal authorities took nine possible illegal immigrants into custody after they were believed to have come ashore in Palm Beach. A teenage girl was found dead on the beach that morning and was later confirmed to be part of the group. The next day, three men from Jamaica and Guyana were picked up near Tequesta. They face charges of illegally re-entering the country after being previously deported.

UPDATE

The Bahamian men, who are 30 and 33 years of age, are believed to have smuggled seven men and three women.

Five of the illegal immigrants are from Colombia, two are from Ecuador and three are from Haiti. Ages range from 20 to 44 years old.
