During Wednesday’s Republican Study Committee (RSC) meeting, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) challenged Sens. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Jeff Flake (R-AZ) to explain why they are pushing the “Gang of Eight” immigration bill when the country is reeling from the IRS, Department of Justice (DOJ) and Benghazi scandals.

“I had two basic arguments,” Gohmert told Breitbart News of his remarks during the RSC meeting. “One was that this is the administration that has refused to enforce the law, and that they have created new law out of nothing. They’ve violated the law in a number of ways. And our guys are counting on the administration to all of a sudden actually keep their word on something like securing the border when they’ve never done it before and they believe it’s in their political interest to continue not to secure the border even if there’s a deal? I mean that’s crazy to think they’re going to start securing the border and until we secure the border everything else is completely meaningless.”

Gohmert said he argued that it does not make sense to push this immigration bill--which grants amnesty to America’s at least 11 million illegal immigrants before securing the border--now, especially when there is an opportunity here to further expose President Barack Obama’s administration’s many scandals.

“Then I said: ‘I mean think about it guys, for the first time, we now have the American public--a big part of the American public--that are really looking at the damage that’s been done to our framework of this country,’” Gohmert said in a phone interview with Breitbart News. “The IRS is out of control and people for the first time are really, on both side of the aisle, across America, I mean Republicans and Democrats, are looking at the damage that’s been done with the abuses in the IRS. You’ve got people, Republicans and Democrats, that are actually looking at and concerned about the violation of the freedom of the press with the Justice Department problems and abuses there. And they’re concerned about the State Department and the military that when people are sent somewhere in harm’s way and they get in trouble this administration is not sending help.”

Gohmert said he went on to argue that the framework of the country should be fixed and restored before dealing with the immigration issue.

“All these things are like termites that are eating into the framework and they’re destroying the framework and for the first time the American people are finally noticing all the damage to our infrastructure, to our framework and to our very existence here in the country,” Gohmert said. “And now all of a sudden you guys want to stand up and say forget about the termite damage, and the fact the house is about to fall in on us, let’s talk about all the guests we have in our home right now and whether we’re going to give them legal status and whether we’re going to have more guests join us and what their status will be. And the house is about to come down around our ears. We need to fix this problem and not get distracted, do it right, and fix these other problems while America is looking and supporting. And then we need to demand that the president secure the border and then we’ll take care of the immigration problem after he secures the border.”

Gohmert said the Gang of Eight senators in the room did not react to his comments at all. “I didn’t get a reaction,” he said.

Rubio and Flake had attended the meeting to brief RSC members on their immigration bill. Sens. Rand Paul (R-KY), Mike Lee (R-UT), Jeff Sessions (R-AL) and Ted Cruz (R-TX), who are each opposed to the Gang of Eight bill but support real immigration reform, each attended the briefing to offer their perspective on the bill.
