First lady Michelle Obama defended her husband's immigration policies, saying that there was nothing more important than keeping families from being torn apart by deportations.

"Some of these mothers are actually losing the custody of their children because of deportations. As a mother yourself, what do you say to them?" Obama was asked by Univision's Maria Elena Salinas in an interview that aired Saturday.

"There is nothing more critical than keeping families together and that is why Barack has been fighting so hard for comprehensive immigration reform. For the sheer fact that we cannot continue to let families be broken apart," Obama said on "Aquí y Ahora" ("Here and Now").

Thought President Obama has a commanding lead among the Latino electorate, his administration's deportation policies have come under fire from some activists. Critics note that the rate of deportations under Obama has been nearly double the rate under President George W. Bush. However, Obama recently announced a shift in policy that would stop deporting undocumented immigrants who came as children and offer them work visas.

"There is so much more work to do, we all know that. We have to have comprehensive reform that's why the second term is so critical. This is going to be one of my husband's top priorities and it’s essential," the first lady said.

"Thriving families being able to stay together which is why the progress that has been made around the dream act, to make sure that kids who have come to this country who been born in this country, who have lived in this country are not at risk of being deported because of the status of their parents," Obama said.

Obama was also asked why Obama could not extend the deportation freeze to adults as well.

"It's a complicated issue," she said. "The bottom line is that this country needs comprehensive immigration reform. You can't piecemeal it together. And that's what this president is fighting for but he also needs a congress that's going to come to the table."

Here's a suggestion: Keep them together IN THEIR HOME COUNTRY!

What a LIE! The US Taxpayers will pay to send the minor children of illegal aliens back to their home nations safely and all expense paid. These illegal alien parents that abandon their children in the US to try to further milk the system are disgusting and should be charged with child endangerment along with their immigration violations.

They came here illegally risking deportation, what do they expect? It's their own fault and have no one else to blame but themselves. You want to keep your family together? Stay and fight for your rights in your own country.

Sure, lets reward the parents who blatanly disrespect our laws. Sure, let's have more competition in the workforce. We do NOT need illegals. I am sick of hearing that it isn't the kids fault. It isn't our fault either but it has cost us millions for their free schooling and whatever other benefits they have recieved through our tax dollars. The more we reward these people, the more illegals we get.

It is beyond my imagination how our country can cater to illegals in any way while our own citizen struggle and suffer. There is no excuse for shoving aside citizens and placing a foreigner above them. None!

They are not "immigrants". Immigrants come here legally, they are border jumpers and illegals that seem to be spawning for money. JMO

Wouldn't those deported simply take their children with them?

On Saturday, Univision aired an interview with First lady Michelle Obama in which she defended the Obama administration's policy of cancelling deportations and granting outright amnesty for millions of illegal aliens.

While the First Lady's argument was not a new one, it is hardly based upon reality.

Obama was asked by Univision's Maria Elena Salinas: "Some of these mothers are actually losing the custody of their children because of deportations. As a mother yourself, what do you say to them?"

To which she responded: "There is nothing more critical than keeping families together and that is why Barack has been fighting so hard for comprehensive immigration reform. For the sheer fact that we cannot continue to let families be broken apart."

"There is so much more work to do, we all know that. We have to have comprehensive reform that's why the second term is so critical. This is going to be one of my husband's top priorities and it’s essential," the first lady continued.

Of course, if it actually were the case that hundreds of thousands of children were being left behind in this country every year as their parents were deported (The Obama administration claims to be deporting about 400,000 illegal aliens annually.), we would know about it.

The mainstream press would run around-the-clock coverage of such a humanitarian crisis, orphanages and foster homes across the country would be overwhelmed and we would see thousands of Latino children living in the street in every major city across the nation.

However, the fact is, if and when an illegal alien gets deported their children either follow or another family member (usually also an illegal) cares for them.

Those who wish to see our border actually defended in the same manner in which our federal government defends the border of say...South Korea, and who wish to see the rule of law upheld in what was once 'a nation of laws,' do not want to see families "broken apart."

It is really very simple...If Mexican citizens wish to keep their families together, they should either stay in Mexico or immigrate to this country LEGALLY.

Michelle Obama is simply attempting to play on our emotions in hopes that Americans will excuse her husband's unprecedented and perhaps, illegal actions.

In short...the Obamas are desperate!
