SEATTLE, July 23 (AP) — James J. Yee, whose work in the Army as a Muslim chaplain at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, ended when he was arrested and accused of spying, said Sunday that he had been unfairly detained at the Canadian border while returning from a brief visit.

Mr. Yee, who spent 76 days in solitary confinement in a naval brig before being cleared in March 2004, said that memories of his detention came back to him while he was being questioned for two hours at the border on Saturday evening.

“Perhaps this is an indication I’m still of interest to the federal government,” Mr. Yee said. He said customs officials had been polite but would not tell him why he had been questioned.

A spokesman for the federal Customs and Border Protection, Mike Milne, said that border inspections were routine, but that he could not say why Mr. Yee had been stopped.

Mr. Yee said he had driven to Canada from his home in Olympia, Wash., to see a Cirque du Soleil performance in Vancouver.
