A former Houston police officer and his wife have been sentenced to 15 months in federal prison and three years of supervised release for transporting undocumented immigrants from the border to Houston, according to a statement released Wednesday by the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Texas.

Juan Carrillo, 52, and Rosa Lidia Carrillo, 43, of Cypress, pleaded guilty in January to transporting two undocumented individuals from Eagle Pass.

According to court documents, the couple drove through an inspection point in Big Wells on Highway 85 on Nov. 8, 2015 with two undocumented passengers in their car. Investigators had evidence that indicated Rosa Lidia Carrillo had wired money to a relative who planned to cross into the United States.

The couple admitted in their plea that they had driven to Eagle Pass to pick up a relative and his companion who had been smuggled across the border to a safe house.

Federal prosecutors sought the conviction along with the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Border Patrol officials in Del Rio.
