Vazquez entered the U.S. illegally at age 12.
Oscar earned a scholarship at ASU, but it was taken away when the Legislature passed a law that barred illegal immigrants from receiving financial aid.
Oscar, realizing his legal status would prevent him from using his degree, returned to Mexico and applied to re-enter legally
Ten days after Oscar's story was featured in The Republic, the government granted his request for a visa. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., a longtime proponent of immigration reform, read his story and got involved.
He stole a spot in school and got his degree anyway, the whole time he is knowingly breaking the law.
It wasn't until he realized that laws being passed would prevent him from working illegally that he went back to mexico.
While in mexico he has a paper post his SoB story and gets a Democrat to grant him amnesty.
This guy should never ever have been allowed back in the US, let alone given amnesty.
Don't get me wrong, but I'm looking at this from two sides.
His re-entry (legal this time) was definitely fast-tracked, and his previous illegal residency was completely ignored. His consequence was virtually non-existant. He returned to mexico for how long? 3 months? 6 months? One year?
On the other hand, once he got the go ahead to come in legally, he did not have to sign up to serve in our military. He did and I applaud him for doing that.
Welcome to the US Oscar!
There isn't 2 sides to this, the dude is a law breaking criminal who only did this because he had no choice. He even admitted he only did this because he couldn't get a job illegally.Quote:

He is a criminal who is not only in our military but is going to get citizenship. He deserves jail time and deportation, nothing else.
He didn't sit back, march in the streets and demand amnesty, he worked for citizenship.
The DREAMERS use the inability to enlist in military as a carrot for amnesty when this path of returning to your home country and getting a VISA to come here and join the Armed Forces has always been an option. This was an argument made against the DREAM Act.
The rules say people can come on a Temporary VISA and join the military and I agree with Miguelina, after he got here he didn't have to join.
He received a free, until college, which he paid for a large portion of, education in the US. He is now serving this country and paying back as we look at 3 wars in Islamic countries. The military is not a cake walk or a desk job that just draws a paycheck.
If no praise is given for doing things the right way, where is the incentive?
12 years old is still a child. What was he to do if left alone. How many of us would want our 12 year olds to be left alone?Quote:

True a scholarship and other freebies were stolen from a legal citizen, but that was our governments and his parents' fault.
I welcome him regardless because of his good caliber. On the other hand, will he be able to sponsor other family members to come to the US and will they get special consideration? Probably, and I don't like that at all....
Oh, so you are now buying into the he is too young BS? Simple, neither him or his mom (where is his dad?) should have been here. I'm sure he has tons of cousins, aunts, uncles, etc who could have watched him.Quote:

So he joined the military. Big freaking deal. That doesn't say he has a good character at all. All it tells me is that he knows how to play the system. He stays in for 2 years, gets decent money and dang good experience. He gets fast tracked to citizenship and all his crimes forgiven. I'm surprised that more criminals don't pull this.
I'm really surprised about how many people on this site fell for such an obvious BS/SoB story/scam.
He paid for his school while working illegally. He stole jobs from US Citizens. He could have left at 18 but stayed. He even admits in the article that he only left because he couldn't get a job illegally.Quote:

Just because he joined the military doesn't make him anything other then what he is. A criminal illegal who pulled out a good scam/sob story to convince people he is ok.
Incentive for doing the right thing? How about being punished for breaking the law and stealing from US Citizens?
This article is nothing more then another attempt by open border people to try and convince others that illegals are not criminals.

The fact that neither he or his mom (or dad) should have been here and he probably has tons of cousins, aunts, uncles etc. who could have watched him is irrelevant now as he was brought here and that is past and nothing can be done about that now. At least he turned out to be one that did something good instead of turning into a gangster.
I did not say I think it should have been allowed or that I support the actions of the parents or family. I absolutely agree that the children should be deported with the parents, but .. it did not happen - past.
Yes, I still think that 12 years old is a bit young for a child to demand that his parents leave him with relatives because children do not naturally do that. They want to be where their parents are. I'm sure he was not versed in immigration law even if he did know that his parents were doing wrong. 12 years old is still quite young to expect him to not go with his parents. I certainly did not consider my children grown-up to make their own decisions at 12.
It sucks that the anchor babies benefit at the expense of legal and natural born citizen children. But until the automatic citizenship thing is changed, it's going to continue to happen. I'm just glad that at least to get something good out this, this guy did go back and do it right and served this country in the military.
I also think that these anchor babies should never be allowed to sponsor anyone from their home countries - the penalty to the families for having broken the law. That would go a long way toward stopping illegals coming here to drop their anchor kids.
