OCEANSIDE: Police issue 43 citations during immigration protest

OCEANSIDE ---- Police officers burned through their ticket books Saturday while protestors on both sides of the immigration debate faced off outside a Spanish-speaking church.

Officers issued 43 citations, impounded nine vehicles and arrested one juvenile near the Ebenezer Church, where the Mexican Consulate was issuing identification cards known as matricula consular, Officer Kim Rainwater said Monday.

Most of the tickets were for unlawful use of a horn, unsafe turns and pedestrians in the street, she said.

About 40 members of the anti-illegal immigration San Diego Minutemen protested the consulate's event, which drew 400 to 500 people to the church on Canyon Drive, Rainwater said.

There were about a dozen counter-protestors, Rainwater said.

Jeff Schwilk, founder of the Minutemen, put the number higher: "I'd say at least 100 people came out in opposition to us," he said.

Rainwater said one juvenile was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor battery for shoving a protestor. Police impounded at least three vehicles because of unlicensed drivers, and others because they were parked in a nearby shopping center without permission, she said.

Schwilk said he was encouraged to see officers scribbling tickets, even though some were issued to people on his side, including an overzealous horn honker.

"They enforced the law in a way we don't normally see," Schwilk said of the officers. "They kept the peace."

Consulate spokesman Alberto Diaz said the consulate issued about 350 passports and identification cards throughout the day.

"Things went well," he said.

Diaz said he heard a few secondhand complaints about citations people felt were unfair, but nothing from those directly affected.

Mexican consulates issue the identification cards to immigrants in the United States. Many banks and businesses accept the photo IDs.

That frustrates anti-illegal immigration activists who say the cards encourage illegal immigrants to stay in the United States.

Oceanside City Councilman Jack Feller and Vista Unified school board trustee Jim Gibson briefly attended Saturday's rally to support the protest.

This was a perfect opportunity for the the Border Patrol to cruise Canyon Drive. I happen to pass by Canyon Drive and OPD was doing a superb job, a ticket here and a ticket there.

I was driving by and a Hispanic man crossing the street into oncoming traffic almost got hit by three cars. And there were more like a hundred Hispanics near the old Big lot store waving Mexican flags. What was that all about?

Mr Diaz says "the consulate issued about 350 passports"... Aren't passports supposed to be issued IN the country of origin BEFORE leaving said country? Oh wait... that's how it's done legally by law abiding citizens of the world. It is apparant that Mr Diaz and the Mexican consulate are either completely IGNORANT of the law or CHOOSE to violate it.

ICE should be paying attention to these "mobile consulates" whose sole purpose is to aid ILLEGAL ALIENS by giving them some form of ID. If ICE is understaffed or low on resources it would stand to reason that going to these gatherings created explicitly for ILLEGAL ALIENS would be like "shooting fish in a barrel" and be a good use of their stretched resources.

Kudos to OPD. I hope you can benefit from a sale of the impounded vehicles driven by ILLEGAL ALIENS.

I just don't undertand what these cards are for? If people are in the states legally they would have some kind of US identification. If they are visitors they would have passports or visas.

So why would people here want Mexican ID cards. They aren't in Mexico!! Am I missing something? Was this the Mexican consulate giving ID's to people who are in the states illegally? Aiding and abetting illegals maybe?!!

Shame on the Ebenezer Church for hosting this event for illegal aliens. Michelle, look up the history of these cards and see the opportunity the banks seized to "tap into a whole new market." It's beyond comprehension that this has been even allowed according to US banking laws. Contrary to popular belief, the only ones who would need one are the ones here illegally because if they have a green card or other government-issued I.D., there'd be no need for a cheap-o matricular card.

Isn't it funny that many times when an illegal is arrested, they have multiple matricular IDs on them with the same photo but different names?

How come no arrest within the City Police Department for failing to proptect the taxpayers from people they know have no business being in the country. Time for citizens arrest to be made? Anfd if I hear one more time it is a Federal matter, I will testify in court for a bank robber that it was an illegal arrest as the officer interfered with a Federal crime. As to who can do the most about illegal immigration, that would be the congressional race, which perhaps should have more play in the city of Oceanside.
