LOS ANGELES, CA (AP) -- An additional ''fugitive operations team'' will be sent out in Los Angeles, to track down and arrest illegal immigrants who disobey orders to leave the country, announces Federal immigration agents.
Julie Myers, assistant secretary of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says, "The United States is a land of opportunity, but it is also a nation of laws."
Myer adds, "As such, an immigration judge's order of removal is not optional and must be followed. The addition of these new fugitive teams increases ICE's ability to aggressively pursue immigration violators as part of our nationwide interior enforcement strategy.''
According to Myers, six other cities also received additional new fugitive teams, bringing the nationwide total to 45.
Los Angeles area holds the largest number of arrest among any city in the nation, since October the ICE fugitive team made more than 2,800 arrests.
Since 2003, ICE fugitive teams have caught more than 52,000 illegal immigrants.
Eric Saldana, who oversees the Los Angeles fugitive operations teams says, "taking immigration absconders off of our streets is a top ICE priority. Those immigration fugitives who remain at large should be on notice, the days when you could brazenly ignore an immigration judge's order are over. We are going to find you and send you home.''
