Raid nets 34 alleged illegal aliens in western New York



SPRINGVILLE, N.Y. A pre-dawn raid resulted in the arrest of 29 alleged illegal Mexican immigrants who were employed at a western New York nursery.

U-S Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers made the arrests as the workers left their housing complexes and were boarding buses to go to work for Schichtel's Nursery in Springville and West Valley in southern Erie and Cattaraugus counties.

Five other alleged illegal immigrants were arrested last night.

Immigration officials say the investigation began with an audit of the nursery's employment documents. Investigators say some the documents kept on file were either fakes or legitimate cards being used by the wrong person.

No charges have been filed against the owners of Schichtel's Nursery.
