    Melting pot boils over

    By: North County Times Editorial

Our view: Politicians must reject polarization as immigration reform strategy

The remarkable wave of protests Monday by more than 1,200 children across North County sent a loud and clear message to our national and local leaders: Do not divide this society for political gain.

For a year or so, there has been a relentless race to the bottom on the critical question of immigration reform.

National figures have sought prominence with plans for Draconian crackdowns. Here in North County, most of the candidates for the April 11 special election to Congress have competed to look the toughest on illegal immigration. Now legislation is being debated in the Senate that would make being here illegally a felony, raising the possibility of mass jailing and deportations among the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the nation.

Americans are reasonable people, so the response that began this weekend was both predictable and overdue. In Los Angeles, an estimated 500,000 people gathered peacefully to protest.

And Monday, more than 1,200 local students walked out of their high schools and into the streets of North County to demand equitable treatment for their loved ones. They deserve no less.

We have several observations: Most of the protesters were Latino; the crowds represented less than 10 percent of the school-age population of Latinos in North County.

Most of the kids appeared to be U.S. citizens. However, many said they were driven into the streets by the prospect that their parents or extended family members may be rounded up and deported by federal officials.

Thankfully, the overwhelming majority of demonstrators were peaceful. There is a risk that further protests could get out of hand, or that Monday's restrained demonstrations could trigger a backlash from anti-immigration extremists.

In any case, responsibility for such public displays of frustration largely rests with failed leadership on the immigration issue. The politicians who pander to extreme views on either side have badly miscalculated the wants and needs of the people, in North County and across America.

The people won't stand for the creation of a police state that snatches parents from their citizen children. Neither will voters stand for another decade or so of federal inaction and cynical political posturing.

Instead, elected leaders must bring people together on the immigration issue. There is a vast community of interest in a fair, just solution that includes effective control of our borders, reasonable accommodations for guest workers, and a clear path to citizenship for families that have earned the privilege.

Above all, voters must reject the forces of polarization. Politicians who would divide us must either swiftly move to the reasonable center on this issue ---- or experience resounding defeat at the ballot box.

I seriously doubt there were many Americans there at all. What I saw were mostly illegal aliens, carrying the flags of their home countries, speaking foreign languages. I saw illegal alien "students" who broke the rules and skipped school, so they could call Americans names and flash their gang symbols for the TV cameras. I didn't see anyone who really wanted to be an American, only people who wanted to take from America.

As always they report the protesters were peaceful and those who support stopping the mass invasion are extremists.

They deserve equitable treatment? Does equitable treatment mean being denied free healthcare, like most Americans? Does equitale treatment mean paying out of state tuition fees like most Americans are required to do? Does equitable treatment mean having to have a driver's license, insurance, etc, like Americans are required to? Does equitable treatment include working with a real Social Security number and paying taxes like Americans have to? Does equitable treatment mean them obeying animal cruelty laws, obeying underage sex laws, or obeying housing regulations? Does equitable treatment include not driving while drunk, or maybe not running away on foot when in an accident? Is that they mean by equitable treatment?

These politicians want to divide Americans from foreigners who hate Americans. This Globalist newspaper would rather the people who hate Americans take over. I guess this paper hates Americans also. They seem to forget that "polarizing" Jim Gilchrest almost won!

This is not the melting pot boiling over, it is a conflict between two different nationalities and cultures, caused by their forced Globalization.
