WASHINGTON, June 24 — Bill Gates and Steven A. Ballmer of Microsoft have led a parade of high-tech executives to Capitol Hill, urging lawmakers to provide more visas for temporary foreign workers and permanent immigrants who can fill critical jobs.

How can Bill Gates ask for more visas when he is hiring Americans part time so he does not have to pay benefits or a fair salary? The senators are stupid to listen to him.

While it might have been true 25 years ago that the US needed to import computer scientists, engineers, and programmers. The fact is that the US has more than enough technology savy individuals to fill its tech sector jobs.

There are millions of US citizens working overseas to fill technology jobs. Jobs in Europe, Saudi Arabia, UAE, etc. The primary reason that these folks work outside the US is that they can earn more in a foreign country than they can earn in the US. The reason for this is that US companies are able to import millions of workers on H-1B visas and this keeps wages low.

So you are wondering why would someone from India or Pakistan take a job in the US? Why not go to some other country and work at the same wage as the US programmer? Most other countries have stricter rules concerning the hiring of foreign nationals. They have quotas on the number of individuals from each country that can be admitted. Also, sometimes language is a barrier. Almost all educated professionals in India and Pakistan speak english, they may not speak french, german, spanish, etc. An educated American worker speaks english of course, and may have language skills that make them a better fit for a job in Europe for instance.

If we lowered the number of H-1B visas then wages would rise in the US and many of these professionals would come home to work. The last time that I checked our technology companies were making plenty of money and they should have no problem paying a little more.
