    France rounds up illegal immigrants

Paris | Alexandre and Inna Kotsyuba thought they were heading to pick up their French immigration papers at last. Instead, they were detained, and within 48 hours, they and their 3-year-old son were deported to Ukraine.

Thousands of families face expulsion in Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy's crackdown on illegal immigrants, a campaign that is about to pick up steam: Monday was the last day many could apply for French residency.

Polls say illegal migrants are a big concern of French voters before next year's presidential election, which Sarkozy is keen to win.

The French government is offering payments to illegal immigrants who agree to return home, such as $6,325 for a family of four with young children.

And Sarkozy championed a new immigration law that makes it harder for foreigners to bring their families here, but easier for those with special talents.

Despite public concerns about immigrants, widespread protests greeted Sarkozy's announcement last October that would deport up to 25,000 illegal migrants in 2006. He backed down, agreeing to give families with school-age children until the end of the academic year to get their papers in order.

Protests again peaked as the school year wrapped up, and Sarkozy agreed to grant residency to those who could prove a strong link to France, giving them until Monday to apply.

Some 24,000 illegal immigrants met the deadline, but only about 6,000 are expected to win residency rights, the Interior Ministry said. A few cases have already been decided, but for most it will take months.

The Kotsyubas were among the first to be forcibly expelled.

They received a letter summoning them to the government office for the Essonne region, south of Paris, and they showed up Friday thinking their application had been approved, said the Education Without Borders Network, which helps families threatened with expulsion.

Instead, an order for their deportation was awaiting them.

The Kotsyubas were taken to Charles de Gaulle airport early Saturday, and after initially refusing to board a plane for Kiev, the couple departed Sunday with their son, Vladislas.

Inna Kotsyuba "was full of hope in going to the government office," said Armelle Gardien of Education Without Borders, which is known by its French acronym, RESF. Gardien, who spoke to Kotsyuba by telephone, called it "a trap."

Roland Meyer, an official for the Essonne region, confirmed the family had not been warned in the letter of their pending deportation.

The administration said the family had trouble integrating, because the father spoke very poor French and the 3-year-old son was in a preschool class for 2-year-olds.

The high-profile mediator named by Sarkozy for the issue, Arno Klarsfeld, supported the deportation as "legitimate." He said the child wasn't being uprooted because at that age his ties were to his parents and not to France.

RESF said Monday that it would renew efforts to protect children from deportation once the new school year gets under way.

All children have a right to attend school in France. Immigrant rights groups estimate 40,000 to 50,000 families without residency rights send their children to French schools.

I never thought I'd say this, but, "Way to go France!" They're finally doing something decent for a change.

Why do these people want to stay in countries that they know are trying their best to deport them?

I'm waiting for ICE to walk into the Chicago church and deport that woman and her child.

France is getting just as tired of illegal aliens as we are. There is no benefit to taking in illegal aliens that are uneducated and at the bottom of the earning chain. They take out far more than they would ever put into the system. They are a drain. Good for them, maybe our government should take a look at what is happening to their country as an example.
