SAN BENITO- An officer with the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office seized nearly half-a-million dollars during a traffic stop on Sunday in San Benito.

The district attorney’s office is tracking where the money came from.

Three people were stopped while driving southbound on Expressway 77, near the Sam Houston exit. Cameron County District Attorney Luis Saenz said the suspects seemed nervous during the stop.

Officers obtained permission to search the vehicle and found a bundle of money wrapped in foil. After further inspection, they found seven more bundles in a duffle bag hidden in an electrical compartment.

Saenz said there’s no doubt the money they seized is drug money.

“It's very common that the drugs go up north,” Saenz said. “They are sold up north and the money comes down south, to the cartel. And we suspect it. Even though we did catch this one, on any given day there's more amounts like this going south."

Saenz expects to have more busts in the future.

His office expects to make additional arrests in this case.
