PARIS (AP) - Six French policemen were harassed aboard a plane and attacked at an airport in Guinea's capital while escorting two Guineans who had tried illegally to stay in France, a spokesman for a police union said Thursday.
Tensions mounted throughout the Aug. 15-16 flight, and when the plane arrived in Conakry a fight brokeout involving about 10 people and the officers, said Paul Le Guennic, national secretary of the UNSA-Police union.
As soon the flight took off, the immigrants appealed to other passengers to defend them, Le Guennic said. Tensions grew further when they emerged from the plane into the customs area of the Conakry airport, where a crowd was waiting, he said.
According to the testimony of the French border police officers, their attackers included passengers from the flight and local police, Le Guennic said.
When the officers returned to Paris, they were given three to eight days off work for back and side pains and face wounds, the union spokesman said.
President Nicolas Sarkozy has called for stepped-up expulsions as part of tougher policies on immigration.
There was no immediate comment from the Interior Ministry or the Immigration Ministry.
The Foreign Ministry said the French Embassy in Conakry appealed immediately to local authorities, «who are involved in putting in place an adequate welcome program to avoid a repeat of such incidents in the future.

I'm surprised the French didn't surrender.

The people of New Guinea aren't the wehrmacht. The French didn't surrender to a third world rabble in WW2 but to a highly organized, highly disciplined military force.
