Pinal Co. Sheriff Paul Babeu: 'The border is not secure'

PHOENIX -- While the Department of Homeland Security says it has made significant progress in securing our border with Mexico over the past few years, Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu says that's not the case.
"We hear the border is more secure than ever," Babeu said. "We obviously know different than that, having lived here, and the enforcement statistics prove it out."
According to Babeu, the Pinal County Sheriff's Office has seen a significant increase in drug seizures, vehicle pursuits, and calls to the U.S. Border Patrol for illegal immigrants.
In 2008, PCSO seized 19,618 pounds of marijuana. In 2010, that number jumped to 44,819.
PCSO deputies were involved in 140 pursuits in 2008, 289 in 2009, and 335 in 2010.
In 2008, there were 169 calls to the U.S. Border Patrol. That number increased to 270 in 2009, and 370 in 2010.
"If the border is more secure now than ever, how come we are seeing these dramatic increases?" asked Babeu in a news release. "Each and every time a vehicle flees from my deputies it puts them and everybody else on the roadway at risk. These numbers truly show the border is not secure and needs immediate attention.â€

And don't forget the signs erected by BLM 80 miles north of the Arizona/Mexico border warning Americans to stay away from parts of our own territory because of the danger from drug/human smuggling violence. And to top it off Incompetano sends more scarce border protection resources to Afghanistan to defend their borders while allowing the very terrorists we are fighting to easily cross our own wide open borders. For every illegal alien border crosser BP apprehends, 4 or 5 evade capture. BP apprehended 6,000 alone in 2008 from special interest countries (OTMs). I guss Incompetano also doesn't give a damn about an undercover government security team who successfully sneaked enough simulated fissile material across an unguarded part of the border to make a nuclear device (only 852 miles of the 1,957 mile long southwest are secure and even that is a crap shoot) right up to the steps of the Federal Building in Phoenix using the same backpacks used by illegal aliens to smuggle drugs, weapons and god only knows what else into this country.
The welfare and security of the American people have taken a backseat to open borders and illegal alien votes for Demoncrats, cheap labor for RINOs and suffering and struggling Americans be damned..............There is no freedom without the law. Remember our veterans whose sacrifices allow us to live in freedom.

Sheriff Speaks Out About Napolitano's Trip

PHOENIX - The number of border-related crimes skyrockets in Pinal County and the Sheriff there says any notion that border crime is down is just plain wrong.
Some of President Obama's top officials have been saying the border is safer than ever, including Homeland Security Secretary and former Arizona Governor, Janet Napolitano.
Pinal County released a report showing marijuana seizures, vehicle pursuits and general calls to the border have gone way up over the past two years.
The numbers of marijuana seizures from 2009 and 2010 are more than double the numbers from 2007 and 2008 at nearly 45,000 pounds.
Pursuits are also way up, with 335 in 2010 and deputies were called to the border 370 times. Back in 2008, they were only called 169 times.
Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu emphasizes that these numbers do not take into account the increase in violent crime associated with the border battle. He says all the evidence shows that the border needs more attention.
"We already know that more than half the drugs that come into America come through this corridor...Santa Cruz, Cochise and Pima County funneled up through Pinal County and this is where whatever we do and don't do in Pinal County effects not only the state, but the rest of America," said Babeu.
The Sheriff says he's disappointed that our former Governor is quote, "ignoring" the problem.
Napolitano is currently in the Middle East, visiting countries such as Afghanistan, Qatar and Israel to work with them on securing their borders and increasing airline security.

(Mod Edit/Rule violation/RB)
I understand that Janet Incompetano was in Afghanistan recently lecturing their President on the importance of securing their border with Pakistan. Man, the hypocracy had to be just dripping off of Mr. Incompetano. It just keeps getting more and more interesting as it goes.

I see this guy on the news all the time out here trying to tell the feds what is going on in the desert around here. This sheriff is really smart and knows what's going on because he and his deputies are on the front line, yet the feds want to just continue to say everything is hunky dory and refuse to listen to him or Sheriff Joe.

Border crime on the rise in Pinal, down in Pima

A recent drug seizure in Pinal CountyReporter: Sergio Avila
TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - We've seen pictures of tons of marijuana being seized in Pinal County. We've seen Pima County deputies hunting at night searching for elusive smugglers. Now Pinal County's Sheriff Paul Babeu is claiming the border isn't as secure as it's being made out to be. Babeu has seen a huge increase in border related crime in his county.
"If you don't solve the core problem of securing the border, you and I will be having the same conversation 5 years from now. This problem will repeat itself over and over again," Babeu said.
His counterpart to the south Sheriff Clarence Dupnik says otherwise.
"I don't think so much about what we've done but what has been going on in various parts in Mexico and the increase of people with the border patrol, things are much calmer then they were a few years ago.>
So 9OYS decided to check out the numbers for drug seizures, cash seizures and illegal immigrants detained.
Marijuana Seizures 2010
Pinal County Sheriff's Office: 45.000 lbs
Cochise County Sheriff's Department: 40,000 lbs
Pima County Sheriff's Office: 2600 lbs
The numbers for the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office were unavailable.
Cash Seizures 2010
Pima County Sheriff's Office: $1.4 million
Pinal County Sheriff's Office: $91,000
Cochise County Sheriff's Office: $12,000
Illegal Immigrants detained 2010
Cochise County Sheriff's Office: 540
Pima County Sheriff's Office: 331
Pinal County Sheriff's Office: 200
Babeu has been the most vocal sheriff on border issues in Southern Arizona. He was quick to point out that his numbers have increased dramatically. If you ask Dupnik he's not surprised Pima County's numbers are going down while Babeu's are going up.
"There's a tremendous amount of activity that still goes on on the Indian reservation which we are not invited on. So we don't go there. The activity comes through the Tohono O'odham nation and it winds up on I-8 and it winds up dumping in Pinal County," Dupnik said.
Although sheriffs Dupnik and Babeu disagree on whether border crime is up or down both are adamant illegal smuggling of both drugs and people are huge problems. Especially here in Arizona.
