Border Patrol agents based in Santa Cruz County found seven undocumented immigrants hidden in four car trunks this week.

On Monday, Nogales Station agents assigned to the Interstate 19 checkpoint referred a suspicious vehicle for a secondary inspection and discovered two people in the trunk, the Border Patrol said in a news release.

Less than an hour later, agents at the I-19 checkpoint referred another vehicle for additional inspection and discovered one undocumented immigrant hiding in the trunk.

Meanwhile on Monday, Sonoita Station agents working at the State Route 83 checkpoint referred the driver of a Ford Taurus for a secondary inspection and discovered two people in the trunk, the Border Patrol said.

Then on Wednesday, Sonoita-based agents stopped a Dodge Charger with a phony license plate. During questioning of the occupants, the agents learned that the two visible passengers were in the United States illegally. When they searched the car, they found two more immigrants hiding in the trunk.

“Agents questioned all individuals found in the vehicles’ trunks and determined that none of the subjects knew how to escape in case of an emergency,” the Border Patrol said, adding: “Historically, criminal smuggling organizations have shown little regard for human life and often put migrants into dangerous situations during their smuggling attempts.”
