CBP Officers Seize Weapons, Ammunition from Traveler Exiting the U.S.

(Thursday, June 17, 2010)

Nogales, Ariz. - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers stopped the illegal exportation of ammunition concealed in duffle bags aboard a tractor trailer.

At about 8:40 p.m. on June 15, CBP officers at the Nogales port of entry were screening travelers headed towards Mexico when they came in contact with a 36-year-old man driving a 1993 International semi tractor and trailer. The man was identified as a Mexican national and resident of Nogales, Sonora, Mexico. CBP officers selected the vehicle for an outbound inspection.

CBP officers searched the vehicle and discovered two duffle bags containing ammunition. A total of 6,424 rounds of high-caliber ammunition, along with 20 AK-47 assault rifle magazines, and a single AK-47 high-capacity magazine drum were found inside the two duffle bags.

CBP officers seized the ammunition and vehicle. The man was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for further investigation.

While anti-terrorism is the primary mission of CBP, the inspection process at the ports of entry associated with this mission results in impressive numbers of enforcement actions in all categories.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
