Police: Gwinnett Stabbing Suspect Knew Family
Posted: 8:27 pm EST February 9, 2011Updated: 7:19 pm EST February 10, 2011
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- A man has been charged in the fatal stabbing of two young boys, Gwinnett police Cpl. Jake Smith said.
The suspect, Antonio Cardenas-Rico, 28, appeared before a judge Thursday afternoon and was formally charged with two counts of murder.
Channel 2's Manuel Bojorquez, who was the only reporter inside the courtroom, said the suspect was from Las Vegas, Nev. and is married with two children himself.
The killings were part of a quadruple stabbing at a home on Bridle Path Drive outside Lawrenceville, Smith said. Officers made the gruesome discovery at about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Smith said.
The boys, 1-year-old Edward Garcia and 3-year-old Bradley Garcia, were found in the basement of the home, Smith said. He said another 3-year-old boy was also stabbed. The surviving child was flown to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, where he was in serious condition, police said.
A 23-year-old man, Elvis Garcia, was also found stabbed. He was taken to a local hospital in serious condition.
"This one kind of shocks the conscience a little bit. The innocence of the youth of the victims. I don't recall one like this in some time," said Smith.
Police did not give many details about the suspect. “We don't know at this point if entry was forced or not. He was familiar with family, and the family was familiar with him,â€

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Police in Gwinnett County say they have made an arrest in connection with a double-homicide in Lawrenceville.
Gwinnett County Police say they have arrested Antonio Cardenas-Rico, 28. Cardenas-Rico is charged with two counts of murder.
Police say they responded to a 911 call Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. to a home on Bridle Path Drive. When units arrived at the scene, they discovered a male, identified as Elvis Garcia, 23, outside the home with multiple stab wounds. Police Garcia was the person who made the 911 call.
Investigators say the bodies of two children, Edward Garcia, 1, and Bradley Garcia , 3, were discovered in the basement of the home. Police say both children were stabbed.
Another 3-year-old child was also stabbed and in critical condition when the child was transported to Gwinnett County Fairgrounds and then life-flighted to a children's hospital in Atlanta.
The injured man -- who is also the father of the children -- was transported to an area hospital in critical condition, say police.
Police say the mother and another sibling were not at home at the time of the stabbings. They were located and have been cooperating with investigators.
Cardenas-Rico is being held without bond at the Gwinnett County Jail.
Police say the case remains under investigation

Stabbing Victim Gets Death Threat Before Family Attacked

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA -- Two police incident reports may shed light on a connection between a man who is accused in a multiple stabbing and his victims. A Gwinnett County father and his three children were stabbed, two of the children died.
On February 2nd, the father of the children, Elvis Garcia, reported to Gwinnett County Police that someone threatened to kill him. Two police incident reports suggest Garcia was being threatened by the children's mother's boyfriend.
On Thursday morning Gwinnett County Police arrested Antonio Cardenas-Rico, age 28, and charged him with two counts of murder. One year old Edward Garcia and 3-year old Bradley Garcia died from multiple stab wounds after they were attacked with a knife inside their home on Bridle Path Drive. The twin brother of the 3-year old boy is in critical condition at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston Hospital. Their father, Elvis Garcia, is in serious condition at Gwinnett Medical Center.
Gwinnett County Police said the victim's knew their attacker. "He's known to the victim's family but the exact nature of their relationship is unknown at this time," said Cpl. Jake Smith.
But two police reports filed eight days before the stabbings may establish a relationship between the suspect and the father of the boys. Elvis Garcia called police on February 2nd and told them his ex-girlfriends boyfriend called him and threatened him. "Garcia stated that the suspect said "I will kill you," according to the police report.
Garcia told police the person who threatened him was named Patric Cardenas. Gwinnett County police said they are trying to figure out if Patric Cardenas is the stabbing suspect Antonio Cardenas-Rico or another person.
It appears that Garcia was involved in some sort of domestic dispute with the mother of his boys who he never married. "Mr. Garcia stated the suspect (Cardenas) is upset because Mr. Garcia and ex-girlfriend are feuding over the children" the report said.
"I think to most reasonable people it's outside of the realm of even thinking it possible, but I don't have any information on why he would specifically target children like that," said Cpl. Smith.
Gwinnett County Police said they have not been able to talk to Garcia because of his condition. They are hopeful he can tell them if the man who stabbed him is the same man who threatened him.
Police also told 11 Alive News they are going to make more than one arrest. They said more than one person may have been involved in the attack.

Suspect arrested in Gwinnett child killings
By Andria Simmons and Rhonda Cook
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Gwinnett County police have charged a 27-year-old man in the stabbing deaths of 1- and 3-year-old boys found dead in a house near Lawrenceville Wednesday night.
Antonio Cardenas-Rico is being held in the Gwinnett Detention Center without bond in the attack, which left two other family members seriously injured.
Cpl. Jake Smith said investigators are still interviewing the dead boys' mother, who was not home at the time of the attack. She is cooperating fully with authorities, he said.
Police did not give details on how they caught up with Cardenas-Rico. They said tips led them to a home at 3020 Arden Ridge Drive in Suwanee overnight.
Officers watched the house before moving in on Cardenas-Rico. He was arrested without a fight eight to 10 hours after the attack.
Police said Cardenas-Rico was known to the victims' family, but how they knew each another was unclear.
Police charged Cardenas-Rico with killing 3-year-old Bradley Garcia and 1-year-old Edward Garcia. Another 3-year-old boy was stabbed and was critically wounded. Elvis Garcia, 23, identified as the boys' father or stepfather, was stabbed multiple times and was in serious condition.
"This one shocks the conscience a little bit due to the innocence and youth of the victims," Smith said. "We haven't seen one like this in quite some time."
Cardenas-Rico, wearing a green jail jumpsuit, was escorted into Magistrate Court for a brief first appearance Thursday. Attorney Matthew Crosby was assigned to represent him. He said he had two bank accounts; one was empty and the other contained $1,500.
Cardenas-Rico told the judge through an interpreter he has a wife and two children in Las Vegas. He said he understood his rights.
His next court date is Feb. 16.
About 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, police responded to a 911 call at 1110 Bridle Path Drive in the Huntington Falls subdivision. Officers found the two boys, ages 1 and 3, in the house's finished basement. Another 3-year-old boy was flown to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta in critical condition.
Elvis Garcia was taken by ambulance to Gwinnett Medical Center.
After the attack, Elvis Garcia ran across the street and screamed to his neighbor, "He killed my children!" the neighbor told the AJC.
The father came charging into Lewon Thomas' garage "with a hole in his chest," holding a cell phone and talking to a 911 operator, Thomas said.
"He wanted me to go back and see what happened," said Thomas, who went along with another neighbor. "It was horrific."
Thomas said the father believed he knew who was responsible.
"He said it was the ex-boyfriend" of his girlfriend, Thomas said.
Police initially said the victims had been stabbed or shot. But on Thursday they said there were no gunshot wounds and that two of the boys were 3, not 4.
The Huntington Falls neighborhood was quiet Thursday morning and there was no sign of activity at the house where the killings occurred. A black Jeep Wrangler was parked in the driveway of the home.
Residents of the neighborhood, off Sugarloaf Parkway, said they were stunned by the crime. Some told the AJC that homeowners association fees include extra police patrols, so they consider the neighborhood, near Scenic Highway, to be "extra safe."
"My God, this is crazy," said Jimmy Holland, who's lived in the neighborhood for eight years.
A helicopter used the nearby Gwinnett County Fairgrounds as a landing spot before transporting the wounded child, Smith said.
The attack occurred in a finished basement where several people lived. The family that lives in the main part of the two-story brick house was not home at the time of the killings.
