Gang of Eight stops wooing Saxby Chambliss on immigration

By BURGESS EVERETT | 6/26/13 12:22 PM EDT Updated: 6/26/13 12:43 PM EDT

The Gang of Eight is no longer trying to woo Saxby Chambliss to support the immigration bill, a source familiar with the negotiations told POLITICO.

Sens. Chuck Schumer and Lindsey Graham spoke Wednesday morning and agreed Chambliss’s support was no longer gettable after a two-hour negotiating session.

“The Gang was willing to compromise on some of these things, but at the end of the day Chambliss was trying to undo” the bill’s provisions regarding agriculture workers, the source said.

Chambliss told POLITICO he agreed there was an “impasse” but said he had tried to compromise and denied he had “moved the goal posts” during negoitations, as the source said.

“I actually moved backwards. I made a very reasonable proposition and they didn’t accept my proposal,” he said.

Despite the setback on Chambliss, the bill’s negotiators are still looking to accrue the support of other Republicans for the bill.

Top Senate leaders and aides are still attempting to negotiate a deal to vote on more amendments before the bill passes, which could produce a total of 70 or more votes in support of the bill later this week.

Wow, could Politico get anymore biased than this. It is so inappropriate for them to make un attributed statements of fact. 'before the bill passes'. Wow.
