GEO Group lands $236 million contract to house 1,800 ICE detainees in South Texas

The ICE unit of DHS has issued a $236.2 million contract to The GEO Group to provide detention services for 1,800 male detainees who have been taken into custody pending removal proceedings at the company-owned and company-operated South Texas Detention Center (STDC) in Pearsall, TX.

The GEO Group, which is headquartered in Boca Raton, FL, is one of the largest owners and operators of commercial prisons and correctional facilities in the U.S.

The announcement of the contract award for $236,231,690 was published by ICE on December 22. Pearsall is located about 57 miles southwest of San Antonio, TX.

“This modern detention complex was designed and built in 2005,” says The GEO Group on its own Website. “STDC includes fifteen (15) male dormitory housing units; nine which housed 100 detainees and six which house 64 detainees. There are six female housing dormitories; three which house 100 female detainees, one which houses 60 female detainees. And one houses 19 female detainees.”

“There are two male and one female housing units containing 2-person cells,” the company’s Website continues. “Additionally, the facility housing design includes dormitory housing units (2) for juveniles, housing a total of 66. Recreation yards are attached to all housing units. Dedicated space is provided to ensure support services are provided for the detainee’s, i.e. food service, medical service area, and central laundry.”
