Grijalva to lead charge vs. SB 1070
by Taylor Summers (March 27th, 2012 @ 9:30am)
PHOENIX -- Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Yuma) will lead a band of 68 U.S. congressmen to make their case against SB 1070 in front of the Supreme Court.
"The framers of the Constitution vested that authority to determine how immigration law is enforced. Otherwise, you're allowing Arizona to usurp Congress' authority through SB 1070," Grijalva said.
Grijalva said he will argue that the Supreme Court should uphold the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals' ruling that the controversial immigration bill goes against the Constitution.
He believes that the federal government should remain in charge of immigration policy and enforcement, otherwise states with differing policies would create a patchwork of immigration laws.
The Supreme Court will hear arguments on SB 1070 starting April 25, right after the hearings on health-care overhaul have finished.
