GOP lawmakers say Trump wants tough measures in Dreamers deal

GOP lawmakers say Trump wants tough measures in Dreamers deal

Democrats left a dinner last month with President Donald Trump enthusiastically touting a deal for “Dreamers.” Republicans who dined at the White House on Monday say Democrats may want to check the fine print.

Influential GOP lawmakers say Trump laid out a much more expansive and rigid set of demands Trump wants from Congress in any agreement to turn the expiring Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program into law.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said he made the case to Trump that funding for a border wall should be part of any legislative package on DACA. Asked if Trump agreed, McCarthy said yes — which would go counter to an agreement that Democratic leaders thought they had struck last month.

One other new requirement, according to one Republican senator who attended: Congress needs to pass a bill that addresses solely the current population of DACA recipients, rather than a broader circle of young undocumented immigrants.

“The president was very clear. Any effort to codify DACA needs to, one, be limited to DACA so the first criteria under the law should be you have a DACA permit today,” Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) said in an interview Tuesday. “Second, any deal has to end chain migration. And then third, it ought to include some kind of enhanced measures, whether it’s on the border or interior enforcement or what have you.”

Trump’s latest wish list is a far cry from the basic border-security-for-Dream-Act exchange that he laid out to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) during their own dinner last month.

And it could spell trouble for the prospects of reaching an immigration deal with Democrats, whose votes will be needed to pass any Dreamer bills but will be reluctant to swallow any dramatic enforcement measures or other restrictive provisions.

“If the president is changing his view, he should tell us. I’ve talked to the president, I’ve talked to Gen. [John] Kelly, about continuing on the path that we all agreed to indisputably," Schumer said Tuesday. "If they want to continue on that path, great. If they want to back off, let them tell us."

But if Trump insists on addressing just the current DACA recipients in any legislation, that would rule out bills such as the Dream Act from Sens. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and the Succeed Act from Sens. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) and James Lankford (R-Okla.). Both bills would cover a much broader population than the estimated 690,000 who currently hold DACA permits.

“They didn’t have a deal,” stressed Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas), who also attended Monday night’s dinner at the White House, about Pelosi and Schumer.

Cornyn said Trump would “like to find a solution for these young adults” and laid out some suggestions. Cotton and Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.) also lobbied Trump on including their plan to overhaul the current green card system and slash legal immigration limits in a DACA deal.

The Texas Republican said he expects the White House to send Congress a proposal outlining what it would like to see in DACA legislation as early as this week.

“So I think there is a way to come up with a resolution, a legislative solution on the DACA situation,” Cornyn said Tuesday. “We’re consulting with the White House, but we are an independent branch and we’re trying to come up with ideas that we think would be acceptable that Democrats and Republicans would fix it.”

Perdue said the lawmakers also discussed including E-Verify provisions — a workplace system that checks whether an employee is here legally — during the dinner, which was also attended by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.).

Democrats would likely oppose that since it would not be paired with a broader legalization program and could ensnare undocumented immigrants who would otherwise not be identified. Schumer said Tuesday that Democrats were "explicit" during their meeting that interior enforcement provisions such as E-Verify would not be a part of the immigration agreement.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), who will play a critical role in any immigration deal, laid out his own parameters for a DACA deal on Tuesday — chief among them border security, but “by that I don’t mean a wall.”

The Iowa Republican also will insist on robust interior enforcement measures like making E-Verify mandatory for all employers. Grassley said lawmakers need to “take a hard look” at backlogs in the immigration courts and asylum system so that federal officials can speed up deportations “while preserving lawful claims for those truly in need.”

“It would be a dereliction of our duty if we fail to take steps to end at least some of the illegal immigration as we know it, and kick the can down the road so that a future Congress has to address this very same problem again in another 15 years,” Grassley said. “I’m confident that if everyone is reasonable, we can find a solution.”

It's already dereliction of duty, Senator Grassley. I mean we have 30 million illegal aliens roaming our land, stealing jobs, killing people, robbing seats in colleges, sucking on welfare ... it's already a national crisis because of the dereliction of Congress and past Presidents.

The US Congress has spent a year investigating Russian Meddling in our elections, and all you've come up with is maybe some Russian people or companies bought $100,000 worth of Facebooks ads about topics of interest and concern like ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION. Why haven't you been investigating former administrations and campaigns about the scourge of illegal immigration and the impact of illegal aliens on our economy, wages, unemployment, poverty, debt, wages, education and healthcare, on top of our elections and interfering with our democracy??!!

Trump already has the solution. He ended DACA. That was his job. Now it's your job in Congress to Let It Die.

Now go pass repeal of Obamacare and tax cuts so we can get our American Show on the road.

It's important that we keep things in the proper perspective. Trump didn't end DACA because of some sense of loyalty to his base or because he was concerned about the rule of law, he ended it because he was forced into a corner and left with no alternative.

Trump failed us on DACA long ago when he refused to keep his campaign promise to immediately end the program if elected. It's Texas AG Paxton and AG Jeff Sessions we have to thank for ending DACA, not Trump. Paxton for his threatened lawsuit and Sessions for his refusal to defend DACA in court.

The reason I think it's important we keep things in the proper perspective is because it provides us with some possible insight into Trump's true feelings and motivations on DACA. He was more than willing to allow the program to continue unabated until a fix was provided by the Congress to permanently protect the illegals enrolled in the program. He kept the program alive all this time knowing full well the program was unlawful and unconstitutional. In the early days of his presidency he told DACA members they had nothing worry about because he had a "big heart".

Well, you're certainly free to keep whatever perspective you choose to follow in mind and thank whoever you choose to thank. But when someone tells me they're going to end DACA and they do, I consider that a job well done.

Oh and maybe you missed this:

Ken Paxton, Texas A.G.: It’s up to Congress to decide what to do about DACA

By Sally Persons - The Washington Times
    Tuesday, September 5, 2017

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said Tuesday that he wants Congress to decide what happens to children brought here illegally.

“We’re optimistic that something is going to happen that we can be happy with. We obviously have, with other states, threatened to sue if this is not rescinded. We’ve always believed that President Obama was operating outside it’s constitutional authority when he made up these new laws, and we’re just asking that if this his going to be done it be done the right way through Congress,” Mr. Paxton said on Fox News, referring to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

Mr. Paxton, along with nine other state attorneys general, threatened legal action against the Trump administration if the DACA program was not dealt with. DACA allows children brought to the U.S. illegally to stay. The policy is not actually law, however, and Mr. Paxton said that former President Barack Obama didn’t have the authority to put the policy into place.

“It’s really up to Congress to decide what the best policy is for these kids that are already here. It’s not something that should be done unilaterally,” he said. “This is on Congress, and that’s all we’re saying.”

I wonder where we might be on our issue of stopping illegal immigration if any of the other 26 candidates for President from any of the political parties had won the 2016 election.

Would we have $1.6 billion added to the Obama Omnibus bill for border security last spring? Nope.

Would we have 8 different styles of prototype walls being constructed as we speak? Nope.

Would we have Jeff Sessions as Attorney General kicking the ass out of MS-13 and Sanctuary Cities? Nope.

Would we have the RAISE ACT in play? Nope.

Would we have a reduction in refugees? Nope.

Would we have dramatic reductions in border crossings? Nope.

Would we have significant increases in deportations? Nope.

Would we have a $15 billion border security bill introduced by Senator Cornyn? Nope.

Would we have an end to DAPA and Expanded DACA? Nope.

Would we have travel bans from terrorist countries? Nope.

Would we have and end to DACA 2012? OH HELL NO.

Would we have NAFTA in renegotiation and on verge of termination? Nope.

Would we have an end to catch and release? Nope.

Would we have 20% more immigration judges with more being requested? Nope.

Would Sheriff Joe be a free man? Nope.

Would we have revival of 287 (g) program and Secure Communities? Nope.

Would we have at least 10,000 more ICE Agents requested in FY 2018 Budget? Nope.

Would we have an expanded and energized Border Patrol? Nope.

And this is a small fraction of the work being done every day by this administration with the limited resources available to tackle this enormous problem and doing so against all odds with almost no help from Congress, the Courts, our Major Cities, MSM or even many States. Even most of the world and the Pope are against US and this President in our quest to end the scourge of illegal immigration into the United States, once and for all.

I'm not aware of any lawsuits or threats of lawsuits that forced Trump or anyone else to take all these steps for US. It's just my opinion of course, but unless there's a Court Order in force, I don't think Donald Trump is the type of guy who does much of anything he doesn't want to do.

THE ONLY THING AMERICA PEOPLE WILL BE "HAPPY" WITH IS LET WORK PERMITS EXPIRE AND THEY MUST LEAVE OUR SOIL

    END BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP

    BUILD THE WALL

    TURN THEM RIGHT BACK AROUND

NO RIGHTS, NO JUDGE, NO COURT, NO LAWYER, NO LAWSUITS

    E-VERIFY:
