GOP Rep Introduces Bill to Imprison Officials Who Shelter Illegal Immigrants

Republican Rep. Todd Rokita (Ind.) introduced a bill on Monday that would impose fines and prison time for elected officials accused of sheltering illegal immigrant criminals from deportation.
The Stopping Lawless Actions of Politicians Act (SLAP) Act was introduced after illegal immigrant Garcia Zarate was found not guilty in the Kate Steinle shooting trial. It would subject violators with a fine up to $1 million and up to five years in prison if convicted, Fox News reported.
"It’s time the federal government gets serious about enforcing immigration laws and holding politicians accountable who conspire to break them," said Rokita.
The Indiana Republican was also a supporter of "Kate's Law," a bill that passed the House at the end of June, and would impose mandatory minimum prison sentences on illegal immigrants who have returned to the United States after being deported.
In the 2015 shooting of Steinle, the 32-year-old was shot and killed while walking with her father and friend at Pier 14 in San Francisco. The accused shooter was an illegal immigrant who had previously been deported five times. The death of Steinle and subsequent acquittal of the illegal immigrant charged with her death has reignited a debate over sanctuary cities.
