GOP senators float DACA fix to rescue stalled House border-wall bill

GOP senators float DACA fix to rescue stalled House border-wall bill

    BY ALEXANDER BOLTON - 12/21/18 02:22 PM EST 79

Some Senate Republicans are proposing a reauthorization of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in a last-ditch attempt to rescue funding for President Trump’s border wall.

As a motion to proceed to the House-passed measure providing $5.7 billion for the border wall stalled on the Senate floor, some Republicans proposed at a private lunch meeting to add protections for undocumented immigrants in order to pick up Democratic support.

“I don’t see any reason to proceed to a bill that can’t pass,” said Sen. Jeff Flake (Ariz.), a Republican who voted against a motion to proceed to the House bill, which keeps 25 percent of government funded until Feb. 8.

Flake said he wants to “find a bill that can pass.”

“I think one that could — if we’re going to reopen this thing to add more money for a wall or steel slats, or whatever you want to call it, then throw DACA in too,” Flake said, adding that several colleagues support his position.

Senate Republicans convened a meeting in the Mansfield Room while the motion to proceed to the House bill sat stalled on the Senate floor.

As of 2 pm, it had 43 votes in favor and 45 votes against. It would need a simple majority to pass.

Without Flake's support, it's uncertain whether GOP leaders can pass anything with border-wall funding.

Republicans have a 51-to-49-seat majority but several senators were absent Friday as they expected the House to pass a clean stopgap spending measure Thursday.

Flake said the biggest obstacle to negotiating a last-minute deal to avoid a shutdown is uncertainty over Trump’s position.

“The biggest problem is we just don’t know what the president will sign,” Flake said.

“We heard last week what he would sign. That’s no longer what he would sign,” he added, making reference to signals from the White House that Trump would sign a clean stop-gap measure keeping government funded over Christmas.

Yep, that's until the screws were tightened down by border wall supporters and folks who were holding the President to his past promise not to sign another DHS funding bill without funding for a wall! Trump withered under the fire he was getting! His only option under such immense pressure was to relent and flip.

Senator Jeff Flake is a part of the Uniparty, a thorn in the side to those who reject amnesty and any attempts to repeat the 1986 amnesty debacle. The first concern for him and too many others, is again the illegal aliens, not American citizens, or the security of the United States.

Closing asylum loopholes, ending chain migration, the visa lottery, ending birthright citizenship, changing some visa programs should be addressed. It fades away from discussions and actions.

Ann Coulter and Rep Mark Meadows are the ones that pressured Trump so hard on the wall he changed course.

I'd also like to think our phone calls and email had something to do with it. I'd hate to think I wasted a couple hours making phone calls and sending out emails.

They do not qualify for asylum. Get Judges down there the herd them through. REJECT their "claims" and send them back to Mexico.

Deport them back over the FIRST border they illegally crossed.

Fast track the pregnant ones and their UAC's to the front of the line and send them back!

We are not the worlds daycare center! Let their President house and feed their children.

“They’re not gonna pull people back,” Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas), the chairman of the House Rules Committee, told a small group of reporters as he wheeled his luggage through the Capitol en route to the airport for a flight back to Texas.

Sessions, who lost his reelection race in November, said he’s been encouraging other lawmakers to go home, and has freed his own staff to do the same, in expectation that if a deal is reached it will move through both chambers unanimously.

“If we do have a deal, I’ll come back here immediately, but I think any deal that’s cut now — if there is a deal — it’ll be by [unanimous consent] in the House and the Senate, and we would not bring our members back,” he said. . .
