NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Governor Bill Haslam has signaled his administration isn't behind a controversial bill that targets illegal immigrants.
The Lawful Immigration Enforcement Act would essentially allow state and local law enforcement to figure out the immigration status of someone, during a traffic stop.
"It won't be in our budget proposal that comes out Monday," said Haslam.
Similar to Nashville's 287G program, it then requires law enforcement to detain and turn over illegal immigrants to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The bill though is still moving through the legislative process, and state lawmakers could still pass it.
It was up for a vote Wednesday in committee, but any sort of action was delayed for a week.
