(Sen. Jim Webb) Born Fighting! But AWOL on Illegals.

Born Fighting! But AWOL on Illegals
    July 30, 2007

Senator Jim Webb held an unequivocal position on issues related to immigration curing his campaign for The US Senate. He got solidly to Incumbent George Allen and President George W. Bush’s right and ran there without apology to the members of the Democratic Party that see illegal immigration as a civil right that the US government should never take away. His stated position on these issues would put him in the same political quadrant as Jeff Sessions or Tom Coburn. Yet he did nothing to get the State of Virginia enough budgetary support to enforce Federal Immigration Laws.

Recently, the Senate passed a bill that offers $3 Bil for emergency border enforcement. This sounds like a considerable amount of money and should provide more than enough to help Virginia, or any other state of the union, do what is necessary to carry out the enforcement of Federal Laws. A congress that wants the general population to actually respect and obey The United States Code of Federal Laws should not pass the burden of the enforcement thereof to the states as an unfounded mandate.

ICE requested $26.4 million for 287(g) training from Congress for its fiscal 2008 budget, which would fund the training of 250 state and local law-enforcement officers, 350 jail beds and enforcement-related technology.

On Thursday, the Senate passed its version of the homeland security spending bill for 2008, which includes an additional $5.4 million for the 287(g) program. The bill also allows money left over from $3 billion in emergency border- and interior-enforcement funding to go to the training program.

On paper, the Senate has made it possible to meet Virginia’s estimated obligation. In reality, according to The Washington Times, that won’t occur anytime this Fiscal Year. This gives our Freshman Senator a mission to step and represent our interests on this issue.

Senator Webb stated during his campaign for office that he opposed what was happening to the US via our misguided immigration policy. If Senator Webb would actually work to enact the policies he claims to support, he would be a superlative senator on the issue of immigration.

The only problem with Senator Webb on immigration has occurred after his upset victory, when it became time to actually legislate. He eventually voted against the most recent attempt to legalize illegal aliens, which is commendable. However, he does not stand against legalizing illegal aliens.

He offered an amendment to the recent Senate Immigration Bill which would have naturalized anyone who had been in country longer than four years, regardless of whether they had come legally or not. He spoke on behalf of his amnesty in the Senate. The money quote follows below.

I also have always supported a path to legalization for those who came here during a time of extremely lax immigration laws, but who have laid down strong roots in their communities. I do not, however, favor this path to citizenship for all undocumented persons.

Once he established that people that behaved well after having broken federal laws to arrive here and use our resources, deserve consideration that people who come here legally and grind through the convoluted system do not, he laid out some of his specifics.

Under my proposal, undocumented persons who have lived in the United States at least four years prior to enactment of the bill could apply to legalize their status. I note that this four year period is even more generous than the five-year threshold that was contained in several bills in the past few Congresses – bills that were supported by senators from both parties and by immigrants’ rights groups.

Thus, it comes as no surprise that Senator Webb hasn’t taken enough action to get Virginia enough resources to enforce the laws as prior US Congresses have written them. He doesn’t believe in those laws, and therefore isn’t committed to their enforcement. If Virginia’s elected representatives don’t care whether our state can meet its national obligations under the law, it speaks volumes as to what type of society we will eventually devolve into.

This becomes part and parcel to the failure that George W. Bush’s Presidency has become on immigration. Our Commander and Chief doesn’t want these laws to be enforced, so therefore, our Senators don’t see any reason to go after that goal either. If Senator Webb were sixteen years old, that behavior would be excusable, rather than execrable.

Jim Webb may be a Freshman Senator; however, he is not excused from having to lead in spite of what is wrong in Washington, DC. He campaigned in favor of enforcing immigration law. This was great rhetoric and helped him to win. Now he incurs the moral obligation to undertake the difficult labor of turning great rhetoric into sound governance.

In reality, he has failed to honor his lofty rhetoric except in the breach. He has put forward a ‘compromise’ amendment to a Senate Immigration Bill that would have only benefited friendly law breakers. In a Congress that saw no problem with attaching 1776 earmarks to the recent Defense Appropriations Bill, he has failed to acquire a sum of money that would have amounted to less than .000007% of PresBud 2008, so that Virginia could meet its mandatory obligations under existing Federal Immigration Laws.

The Democrats were elected to end a Culture of Corruption. Virginia’s newest Senator doesn’t even seem to care if his home state can afford to enforce the law. As The Who once famously sang: “Meet the New boss, Same as the Old Boss.â€

As soon as Webb comes up for election, we need to get rid of him!!! It is a shame that Allen did everything he could to lose the election. We really needed him.
