Police: Man chopped up his roommate

The victim’s name has not yet been released, but he was an illegal immigrant from Mexico just like the suspect.

MINT HILL, N.C. -- A Mint Hill police officer thought he was responding to a natural death when he drove Monday evening to a mobile home off Albemarle Road. But when he got to the scene, he discovered a dismembered body and a man who wanted to turn himself in.

“The Hispanic male subject … put his hands out in front like, ‘I’m surrending to you,’ or ‘handcuff me,’ Chief Brian Barnhardt said Tuesday.

Police say Hugo Alvarez, speaking little English, signaled a hand across his throat. The officer soon found out what that signal meant: Alvarez had cut the head off his roommate.

Police got a tip around 5:30 p.m. Monday from the mobile home’s landlord.
Alvarez then showed the officer more body parts, police said. Some were found in a field. Some were thrown in the woods. Others were thrown down an embankment.

Police got a tip around 5:30 p.m. Monday from the mobile home’s landlord. The landlord believed there was a body inside.

"If it hadn't been for the fact that somebody stepped up, we may have never known, Barnhardt said. “It could have been a situation where one day -- if you lived over here and you’ve got a kid over here -- a dog could have wandered over there and brought a part back here.

Alvarez and the victim worked together at a construction site. The victim’s name has not yet been released, but he was an illegal immigrant from Mexico just like Alvarez.

Barnhardt said that although Alvarez is confessing to the crime and cooperating with police, investigators are still trying to be careful as they process the case. They want to make sure justice is served.

This is the Mint Hill Police Department’s first homicide investigation since it was created two years ago.

Barnhardt said he would like to see Alvarez prosecuted instead of deported.

Chief Barnhardt is a cop's cop. Don't do the crime if you don't want to do the time. Good man.
