    Griffis shares thoughts on Border

    Griffis shares thoughts on Border

Mar. 15—Ector County Sheriff Mike Griffis was invited to offer his opinion to a group of lawmakers gathered Wednesday to participate in a U.S. House of Representatives meeting entitled "Failure by Design: Examining Secretary Mayorkas' Border Crisis."

Griffis drove to McAllen to participate in a "pre-meeting" at the invitation of U.S. Rep. August Pfluger (R-San Angelo). Later in the day, the lawmakers were expected to question such people as Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steven McCraw and U.S. Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz.

Alejandro Mayorkas is the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security. He was appointed to his position in February 2021. Committee members include Pfluger, Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Green (GA-14), Rep. Monica De La Cruz (TX-15) and Rep. Morgan Luttrell (TX-0. It's chaired by Mark E. Green (TN-07).

Griffis said he wasn't given much time, but he welcomed the opportunity to speak. Also at the pre-meeting were Sheriff Benny Martinez from Brooks County and Sheriff Allen Castleberry from Kimble County.

He noted U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS 2nd District) was recently quoted in a Breitbart article saying Democrats weren't attending hearings on the border because he believed Republicans were politicizing the issue.

"What I said was the Republicans don't have to politicize this. The administration has already politicized it.

They're more interested in garnering potential votes of people coming across the border than keeping the American public safe from the cartels and the drugs and all that stuff. The votes are more important than the health and safety of American citizens. Bottom line," Griffis said.

There are roughly 30 people in the Ector County jail on Immigration and Customs Enforcement holds right now, Griffis said.

While some of them may be contributing to the local crime rate, Griffis said, "My belief is most people being caught crossing the border are coming over for a better life. It's not to peddle drugs or do anything illegal. They want a better life for themselves and their family."

The economic situation south of the border is contributing to the issue, but the fact remains, everyone crossing the border needs to be vetted, Griffis said.

"I've got a problem just letting everybody through and not know who they are, what they're here for. At this deal today they talked about the cartels controlling the border in most areas, and that is a fact. The cartels, to me, are terrorist organizations have been declared by the governor, and they're talking about it today," Griffis said.

Griffis told Pfluger two 18-year-olds died of probable fentanyl overdoses in Ector County last week and he shared with him a front-page Odessa American story about last month's death of Jackson Warnick, 17.

Cartels will do whatever it takes to make the "mighty dollar," Griffis said.
"The Brooks County Sheriff said it himself.

Send the military over there and take care of these cartels, start in Mexico and go south.

    Start destroying them," Griffis said.

According to Border Patrol statistics, agents seized 1.1 million pounds of drugs in FY20, 913,000 pounds in FY21 and 656,000 pounds in FY22. So far this year, the agency has seized 208,000 pounds.

The Border Patrol arrested nearly 2.4 million migrants in FY22, the highest number ever-recorded.
