    Growing Hispanic Student Population

    Growing Hispanic Student Population

A growing number of students from other countries are bringing changes to the Buncombe County School System.

Over the last five years, the system has seen a whopping 280% increase in the number of students with limited english proficiency. There are now more than a thousand kids with limited language skills, 70% are hispanics.

The district is offering new courses and programs to help those students.

Erwin High School offers a sheltered Algebra class where students can get help in English and Math.

The school also has a club called AIM, that reaches out to migrant students in particular; those students have a 50% dropout rate.
