Gun Shop Owners Upset Over ATF Gun Regulations

Some gun shop owners say ATF gun regulations are a threat. One Valley shop owner shares his fears.

The ATF says the judge’s decision will reduce the number of guns going to Mexico. Gun sellers say they’re not the ones sending them across the border.

“They have allowed thousands of guns to go to Mexico,” says Erick Kruger.

Kruger says it’s hypocritical. The agency who flubbed the Fast and Furious operation is telling him to track the weapons. The ATF imposed new rules last August. It requires gun shops to list anyone who buys more than one semiautomatic rifle.

“It applies to guns like this that have magazines,” says Kruger.

The ATF says it will help detect and disrupt illegal firearms trafficking by tracking straw purchasers. Kruger calls the rules ridiculous red tape. They require him to turn in logs of every serial number. He says the added paperwork makes it easy to slip up. The ATF already cited him for turning in the wrong serial number.

“That mistake has nothing to do with endangering the general public,” says Kruger.

Kruger says he could lose his shop if he slips up again.

“It’s just a simple error,” says Kruger.

He hoped a lawsuit filed by gun activists would stop the ATF from enforcing the rules. A federal judge dismissed that lawsuit earlier this week, calling the new gun rules a reasonable law enforcement tactic.

“The judge who heard it probably doesn’t own a gun,” says Kruger.

Kruger says the ATF should take responsibility for the straw purchases because that’s who allowed that to happen.

“If I did that, if somebody came in here and said they wanted to buy a gun for the cartel and I sold it to them, I would go to prison,” says Kruger.
