Gunfight in Mexico Leaves at Least 45 Dead

At least three officers and 42 civilians killed as police battle alleged gang members

MEXICO CITY—A pitched battle between federal police and alleged members of a criminal gang Friday killed at least three officers and 42 civilians in western Mexico’s Michoacán state, government officials said.

Gunmen ambushed a police convoy about 10 a.m. local time as it traveled a rural highway in Tanhuato, a sparsely populated municipality near Lake Chapala, a resort area popular with U.S. and other foreign retirees, a senior official confirmed. The gunmen appeared to be members of the cartel New Generation, a rising narcotics gang that has clashed repeatedly with federal forces in recent weeks, killing dozens.

“Federal forces repelled the aggression,” the official said.

“The involvement of members of the New Generation gang seems likely,” said another senior federal official.

Members of President Enrique Peña Nieto’s security cabinet are traveling to the area to assess the incident. The death toll is based on preliminary estimates and could change, the officials said.

New Generation has risen to prominence this spring with ambushes and pitched battles with federal police and soldiers across Jalisco state, the capital of which is Guadalajara, Mexico’s second-largest city.

An offshoot of previous gangs aligned with the so-called Sinaloa Cartel, New Generation produces and markets methamphetamine to U.S., Mexican and other consumers.

Officials say New Generation gunmen ambushed a state police convoy on a highway linking Guadalajara with the resort of Puerto Vallarta in early April, killing 15 officers. The gang is also blamed forthe downing of a military helicopter in the region’s rugged mountains earlier this month that killed nine soldiers and federal policemen. Officials have said all the battles erupted as federal forces attempted to detain or kill Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguerra, the groups purported leader.

Well, gangs are still multiplying in Mexico, but that is not surprising at all. The USA has to recognize at some point that the majority of Mexicans are not friends of the USA and have no respect for us or our laws. One part of them run drugs into our nation, another part of them ignore our borders and immigration laws. I believe that may be a majority of Mexico that despises us. We must respond accordingly, but only when committed as in 1941 to achieve UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER!

Yep, most of them probably do despise us, but they certainly don't despise the color of our money!
