Gutierrez out of the running for Obama's Senate seat

Gutierrez out of the running for Obama's Senate seat

    November 26, 2008

U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) on Tuesday all but took himself out of the running to replace Barack Obama in the U.S. Senate.

Gutierrez met with Gov. Blagojevich and told the governor he would like to be a "caretaker" senator for the next two years working to get comprehensive immigration reform passed in the Senate instead of fund-raising to get re-elected to the Senate in 2010, Gutierrez said.

But Blagojevich said he was looking for someone who wanted the post long-term, Gutierrez said. "It's basically over -- unless he calls me back," Gutierrez said.

Doesn't sound like he's too popular with the citizens. Gotta love the comments from the link:

Good....we don't need a "special interest" Senator who's only looking out for a select group of people. He couldn't with a straight face make an oath to represent the people and defend the Constitution since there seems to be nothing about it he agrees with, and only one group he's concerned about...and they aren't even citizens!

I believe this guy. Would someone like Screwy Louie EVER turn down obama's seat? With that seat and obama at the helm he'd be guaranteed everything he wants.

As a resident of Illinois, I wrote to the gov to ask that Gutierrez be removed from consideration for the sentate seat. Hopefully, there were many more that also wrote. This traitor is strictly for the interests of Hispanics at the expense of the American taxpaying citizen. MOD EDIT

This little pipsquick has been busy realigning districts to promote the Hispanic vote. Take a look at his work in Illinois. Just investigate redistricting in Illinois. There's maps of districting that look like a kid designed them. He's also been accused of going out and "helping" people to vote," by taking them registrations and then delivering them to county offices. Anyone out of Illinois' corrupt government would have prosecuted him a long time ago for illegal registration of voters. Time to send him to the locker room.

Oh, and he likes to stand before Congress and other events and call people like us "racists" and "bigots."

Governor says Rep. Davis would make great senator

    Associated Press
    12:27 PM CST, November 27, 2008

CHICAGO - Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich says Congressman Danny Davis would make a great U.S. senator and a good replacement for President-elect Barack Obama.

But the governor's hint came with a caution: He hasn't made up his mind about filling the vacancy yet. Blagojevich spoke Thursday alongside Davis at a Chicago homeless shelter.

The governor's remarks came after Davis said he'd be happy to serve if appointed. And when Blagojevich mistakenly referred to Davis as "senator," reporters questioned him about the slip.

Blagojevich says he must follow the proper process for choosing someone to serve Obama's remaining years as junior senator. He says he's still on track to appoint a successor by the end of the year.

Rep. Eddie Washington petitions governor to appoint congressman

Someone will get an early Christmas present when Governor Rod Blagojevich appoints a senator next month to fill the vacancy left by President-elect Barack Obama.

Congressman Danny Davis, D-Chicago, was in Waukegan on Wednesday to campaign for the seat at a press conference with state Rep. Eddie Washington, D-Waukegan, and local pastors. Davis has similar campaign stops in Rockford, Peoria, Champagne and Cairo over the next few weeks to reiterate his interest in the open Senate post which expires in 2010.

Congressman Danny Davis (center), D-Chicago, speaks at a press conference on his behalf to convince Governor Rod Blagojevich to choose him to fill the Senate seat left by Barack Obama. State Rep. Eddie Washington (right), D-Waukegan, asked the governor not to overlook Davis as a viable nominee. The press conference was held at Greater Faith Church Baptist in Waukegan.
    (Thomas Delany, Jr./News-Sun)

Davis, who has represented the 7th Congressional District in Chicago for 12 years, is not the only one openly campaigning for the position. Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., D-Chicago, is also trying to publicly drum up support.

"I don't think everybody who is interested in being considered intended to be campaigning," Davis said. "I think ultimately we decided that when in Rome you've got to do what Romans do."

He added, "Any dog that doesn't wag its own tail ain't much of a dog."

During the small assembly of about a dozen people at the Greater Faith Church Baptist, Washington asked the governor not to overlook Davis as a viable nominee.

Asked afterward why he wanted to get involved in the appointment, Washington said, "Whoever is Barack's replacement will impact us, whether directly or indirectly so we wanted to put in our two cents, and not stand on the sideline but actually be in the game."

Blagojevich has said he hopes to make his decision by the end of the year but has not indicated who's on his short list.

"The governor thinks highly of Danny Davis and the two have chatted," said Lucio Guerrero, a spokesman for the governor. "There isn't a 'short' list or a 'long' list, but suffice it to say that Danny Davis is high in the governor's mind."

Some other possible successors mentioned in the press include U.S. Rep. Janice Schakowsky and Tammy Duckworth, head of the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs.

Obama served in the Senate from 2005 until he resigned on Nov. 16, following his election to the presidency. He was the only African-American serving in the Senate and some would like to see another African-American appointed to his seat.

"It plays a part and an important part to someone you can relate to, to know the problems and conditions of the community," said the Rev. Robert Evans, Sr. of Waukegan who attended Wednesday's assembly.

If there is even a hint of truth that Gutierrez will not be allowed to fill the Obama senate seat, this is definitely a Thanksgiving gift.

This is very good news that he's out of the running. This guy is almost as bad as Raul Grijalva when it comes to pandering for Hispanic only causes and forgetting that there are people other than Hispanics in the region that they represent.
