Sen. Slade Gorton Adds His Name to Growing Coalition Asking Representative McMorris to Support the Central American Free Trade Agreement
Monday July 25, 12:30 pm ET
CAFTA, which passed the U.S. Senate in late June, is headed for a close vote in the U.S. House of Representatives this week
SPOKANE, Wash., July 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Sen. Slade Gorton has added his name to a growing coalition including the Washington Association of Wheat Growers, the Washington State Potato Commission, Northwest Horticultural Council, the U.S. Chamber, The Washington Farm Bureau and local manufacturers Itron and Pearson Packaging Systems to encourage Representative Cathy McMorris (R-Colville) to support the U.S. Central American/ Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). The agreement is expected to come to a vote this week on Capitol Hill.
"CAFTA will create new opportunities for Washington state to increase its exports," said Sen. Gorton. "The nations included in the agreement -- the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua -- are important trading partners that could see strong growth in the years to come. Our nation's trade agreements need to look toward the future and that is what CAFTA does."
The agreement would immediately eliminate 80 percent of the tariffs currently in place on U.S. exports to the region, with the remaining tariffs being phased out over the next 10 to 15 years, according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Since a majority of Dominican Republic and Central American goods already enter the United States with little or no tariffs, the agreement is important to ensure a reciprocal relationship between the two markets.
CAFTA would require increased transparency in corporate governance, legal systems, and due process in the region, strengthening local economies. For U.S. business, the newly expanded region would benefit companies in financial services, telecommunications, entertainment, and computer services. CAFTA, moreover, would create jobs in Central America and make the region's economies more competitive thus improving the quality of life for the residents.
"Many of the countries included in this Agreement are enjoying political stability after years of turmoil and civil war," Sen. Gorton commented. "CAFTA is the next step in promoting further political reform and economic development among our neighbors all while helping our economy here in Washington state."
