    H-1B visa has side effects

    H-1B visa has side effects

Wilma J. Vass - Leesburg, Va.

The H-1B visa program was never intended to result in the replacement of the training and development of American high-tech workers. As implemented, however, it has contributed to the decline in the U.S. economy and an increase in the U.S. unemployment rate.

Stop parading around the song and dance of Microsoft and Oracle executives who have lobbied to eliminate the cap on these skilled workers.

They are only interested in getting cheap, high-tech labor and are willing to sacrifice the interests of the very country that made their tremendous success possible to achieve that goal.

    Help businesses invest in workers

    Rod Scales - Dallas

Why not assess a tax on employers for each worker who holds an H-1B visa. The amount could be based on two times the worker's gross wages and benefits for the duration of the visa. An adjustment could be made for any pay rate changes before the visa is renewed. These funds would go 100% into grants for legal U.S. residents to pursue graduate work in the areas of higher education that are in demand and that these visa holders are filling ("Congratulations, graduate. Now leave the USA.," Our view, Legal immigration debate, May 12).

Allow the employers to propose the skill areas that they claim are in short supply so training can be targeted to their needs. If other countries can anticipate these needs and train their citizens, then surely we can do the same.

This also would remove the criticism that the H-1B program is just a back door to cheap labor.

John: We can have a rule like that but CEO's will say Americans dont want jobs and that is why they need foreigners.

    How about this?

Every single American who asks for a job should be given a job. If they need special training then they will be trained. Americans who arent given jobs can go to the Unemployment office to get a job. Companies who claim to need foreign workers will be hooked up with American job seekers through the Unemployment office.

Pay decent wages...living wages and businesses will have plenty of takers. Train Americans to do jobs instead of training foreigners. Why do we train foreigners at taxpayer expense? We should be training Americans.

it seems like our gov't wants to destroy us and our country

If the government continues to give our jobs away to outsiders and invaders the American people will not beable to pay the ever growing taxes the gov't saffles them with and the politicans won't get paid. So they better help American stay or get jobs.

It is a disgrace that the American people/workers are being treated worse than yesterdays trash.
