Pelosi delegation visits Central America amid migrant crisis

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — The speaker of the U.S. House, Nancy Pelosi, arrived in Guatemala with a congressional delegation Thursday, starting a Central American trip that seeks to explore the causes of immigration amid a crisis of migrants on the southern U.S. border.

After meeting with government, church and non-governmental groups in Guatemala, the delegation will continue on to Honduras and El Salvador, as well as visiting migrant detention facilities in McAllen, Texas.

Pelosi's office said in a statement that the trip is aimed at "helping empower the people of the Northern Triangle to build a better future at home." The Northern Triangle refers to Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador.

As if to illustratethe issue, just moments after her delegation arrived, more than 200 Guatemalans deported from the U.S. arrived on two separate planes. They are among the more than 34,600 Guatemalans deported so far this year.

The Trump administration is trying to restrict applications for asylum in the U.S. from this region by requiring migrants to apply in Guatemala rather than at the U.S. border.

Guatemala's government recently signed a "safe third country" agreement with Washington but it remains to be seen whether the accord will ever be implemented as it faces widespread opposition in Guatemala.

Pelosi's delegation includes a dozen lawmakers, including the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Earlier Thursday, Pelosi said the delegation will honor the "enormous contributions" that generations of immigrants from the region have made to the U.S.

Because we didn't know if we would have to face Great Britain in war again, or Imperial Russia, or Spain or who knows. In fact we did have later dealings with those powers. We needed productive farmers and industrial craftsmen. Even though China was an ancient and recognized civilization, we usually didn't want a lot of them here, either. And they were usually going after the gold----which they had heard was everywhere in this country.

We didn't have a place for Mongolian herdsmen, Sumatran cannibals, SE Asian rice farmers, etc.

Their presidents "treatment" of their OWN people, in their own country, is SHAMEFUL Nancy Pelosi.

How DARE you say this! How DARE you go to these countries while YOU leave your own constituents in filth, needles, feces, tarps, rats and garbage in YOUR city streets!!!

YOUR citizens who have no home, no job, no shower, no toothbrush! It is SHAMEFUL what YOU have done to San Francisco!

How DARE they stand by and do nothing to help their own people, do not own up to it, and have the NERVE to dump their people and problems on OUR backs to pay for! House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and a delegation of Democrat lawmakers met with a number of left-wing activists and socialist politicians during their visit to Guatemala, some of which have links to billionaire George Soros.

Pelosi and the Democrats made the trip to Guatemala just a few days before the country’s second round of elections, a move that was met with backlash from nationalists and conservatives who demanded the visit be cancelled.

During her visit, Pelosi met with open borders activists such as Helen Mack, who has ties to a multitude of liberal NGOs and who runs the Myrna Mack Foundation — a group partially funded by Soros.

Pelosi said in a statement of the visit:

Later in the day, we engaged in meaningful dialogues with civil society leaders and representatives from international NGOs. The leaders underscored the positive role of U.S.-supported initiatives in ensuring regional stability and the well-being of Guatemalans, which in turn reduces migration to the U.S. The delegation believes that given the proven success of these projects, U.S. support must be restored.

Also amongst the left-wing activists who met with Pelosi were Eduardo Stein and Raquel Zelaya, leaders of the Asociacion de Investigaciones Economicas y Sociales (ASIES) organization, which is supported by Soros’s Open Society Foundation. Guatemalan judge Jazmín Barrios — with links to Soros — met with Pelosi as well.

For more than a month, Guatemalan leftists with connections to Soros and Pelosi have railed against President Trump’s Third Safe Country Agreement with the country. The deal would allow U.S. border officials to block requests for asylum by migrants who pass through Guatemala without asking for asylum in the Central American country.

The agreement would dramatically reduce the chance that migrants from Honduras, El Salvador, Africa, and Asia would be released into the U.S. pending an asylum hearing. The federal government has a similar agreement with Canada, which is designed to stop migrants from passing through many safe counties to reach the U.S.
