Lawmakers are proposing legislation that would make Hawaii roads safer.

Sen. Will Espero, along with several faith and community groups, introduced a bill that would ensure eligible drivers pass a driving test and obtain insurance, despite their nationality or immigration status.

“It is straight forward, clear-cut, and simple about public safety. Safety on our roads, safety for pedestrians, safety for cyclists, and anyone who uses our road ways and sidewalks,” said Sen. Espero (D) Ewa, Ewa Beach.

“They are a part of our families and they’re part of our work force,” said Veronika Geronimo, Hawaii Coalition for Immigration Reform.

Eleven other states have already passed similar legislation.
