Violence, Unrest: Tourists Rethink Mexico Visits

MEXICO CITY -- Stories like the one about a human head washing up on an Acapulco beach are apparently enough to make tourists think twice about whether to visit Mexico.

That's just one of the scary tales helping put a dent in that country's nearly $12 billion tourism industry. In one colonial city, protesters have taken over the downtown and visitors have to go through makeshift checkpoints.

In the capital, Mexico City, some areas that normally are big draws for tourists have turned into protest camps run by leftist demonstrators. They're upset their candidate lost the recent presidential election, claiming it was fraud.

Hotels report thousands of cancellations. Mexico City officials say their businesses are losing $23 million a day.

And it's unlikely to improve soon. Protesters in the capital said they've only taken the first step, and the next thing they'll do is target the airports.

Americans make up a large portion of tourists in Mexico, if we boycott traveling there they will definitely feel the hit in the pocket which will have an adverse effect on their economy. Why should we spend money in a country that has a skyrocketing crime rate and violence and is sucking american taxpayers dry with their poor and uneducated people entering our country illegally. If it takes heads washing up on resort beaches to get that across to americans then so be it. They are just seeing what Mexico really is.
