EL PASO, Texas -- Intentionally hiring an illegal immigrant could soon be against the law.
"The first place they're not supposed to be working here. They don't have papers," said Armida Garcia, of east El Paso.
Some El Pasoans said without illegal immigrants, Texas and El Paso wouldn't be what it is today.
"So many buildings, I mean everything that's been done here it’s been done because of illegal immigrants," said Elizabeth Aguayo, of east El Paso.
For some that is work that could have lessened Texas' unemployment rate.
"They're taking jobs from people that do live here, that are U.S. citizens and are entitled to those jobs," said Garcia.
Under House Bill 2012, anyone caught employing an illegal immigrant could face up to two years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.
It may sound harsh to some, but Garcia said what is currently happening to illegal immigrants in Texas is punishment and their employers should also face punishment.
"They're saving money on hiring those people. They're not paying taxes or Social Security for them," said Garica.
Aguayo said the proposed bill puts pressure on undocumented workers to get legal status. However, some may be exempt from the proposed law. Maids, lawn keepers, and housekeepers don't apply.
In an interview with CNN, one Texas lawmaker said the hiring of maids and lawn keepers is so common they would have to put a large majority of Texans behind bars without the exception.
"I know some people that you know would take care of babysitters or people that clean houses. They wouldn't get paid much, but that is there way of living," said Aguayo.
It is unknown when Texas lawmakers will be taking up the bill or if any changes will be made, but count on KFOX 14 to keep you up to date with the very latest.

This is true;-)
As soon as Texans finish inplementing E-Verify, they should immediately request that their congressional delegation contribute to clarifying the original intent of the 14th Amendment. No jobs + no illegal anchor babies = end of problems by people whom we don't even need.
With a nominal unemployment rate of 8%, which probably means at least 12% if involuntarily underemployed people are included, there should be no shortage of folks to build new buildings. Blacks in Texas should be particularly glad for employment opportunities in the trades. The Dallas Weekly recently published an article which says, According to new U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics joblessness for 16-to-24-year-old Black men has reached Great Depression proportions - more than three times the rate for the general U.S. population.
