Mexican armed gang executes eight, including three cops

    19 May 2008 | 00:12 | FOCUS News Agency

Ciudad Juarez. An heavily armed gang dragged eight men, including three local cops, out of their homes south of here and executed them with automatic weapons, officials said Sunday, AFP reported.
The murders in Villa Ahumada, 130 kilometers (80 miles) south of here, added to five recent killings in Ciudad Juarez, on the US border, and three others elsewhere in the state, are part of a rising wave of violence gripping Mexico, mostly related to the government's stepped up fight against drug trafficking.
In a brazen attack Sunday, heavily armed thugs in camouflage uniforms drove into Villa Ahumada in several pickup trucks and broke into several homes.
"The attackers were all dressed in camouflage, military-style uniforms. They threatened the families (of the eight men) to keep them from talking. Then they murdered (the eight) with bursts of AK-47 rifles and handguns and fled to unknown whereabouts," the state prosecutor's office said in a statement.
It said the eight victims had not been identified although three of the men were local police officers.
In Chihuahua and other states along the US border, where heavily armed gangs battle for control of turf used to smuggle drugs and emigrants, gun violence is nearly constant.
At stake is access to the world's biggest market for narcotics, most of which slip through the border to the United States.
In Ciudad Juarez daily bloodshed has forced Mexican federal authorities to reinforce a military deployment that already counted 2,500 soldiers.
Gunmen assassinated a commander of Mexico City's anti-kidnapping police on Monday, the fourth top police authority slain since the start of the month in Mexico City, as the toll from a rising organized crime wave hit top brass.
