Hispanic media wants FCC to investigate media hate speech

.....here they go..the National Hispanic Media Coalition wants to shut down the debate regarding illegal immigration and its ill effects on all aspects of our society and they want the FCC to "investigate" after the Hispanic Media group come out with their "study" of how they define "hate speech". Basically....anyone who opposes their open borders, pro-amnesty, position or who wants our laws enforced and our borders secured is going to be targeted by their race-baiters. Janet Murguia started this push with La RAZA, Media MAtters and the SPLC last year, remember? She tried to get meetings with top brass at CNN and other stations because the ethno-supremacists can't stand to hear the truth about the negative sides to illegal immigration. Now, they are going to the FCC to try and censor.

NHMC To Ask FCC For Inquiry Into Hate Speech on Radio and TV
Hispanic Media Coalition not looking to bring back fairness doctrine
By John Eggerton -- Broadcasting & Cable, 1/27/2009 12:20:00 PM MT

    Posted at 5:13 pm. ET

The National Hispanic Media Coalition Wednesday will ask the FCC Wednesday to launch an inquiry into hate speech on radio and TV, but is not looking to bring back the so-called fairness doctrine.

“We are asking the FCC to open an inquiry to raise public awareness, to collect information about the extent and effect of hate speech, and to explore options for countervailing or reducing the negative impacts of such speech,â€

These people are so low. They speak with a forked tongue. Saying they respect free speech, but anyone with more than two brain cells knows they want to shut me up, Lou Dobbs, Glenn Beck, Peter Boyles, Terry Anderson, Mike Savage, Roger Hedgecock, and hundreds upon hundreds of bloggers and talk radio show hosts!

Their attempt to silence the debate is UN-AMERICAN!

Why should the FCC, funded by taxpayer dollars, be used to incite public awareness (which also could dissolve into inciting hatred by one ethnic group against those they see "oppressing" them, like the non-Spanish speakers)? I see this demand as nothing more than a push for a rung higher up on the ladder with no concern for the traditions or foundations of this country. And it seems to be a ploy to create more sympathy for those refusing to assimilate into the country they have invaded.

Seems they are the one with the issues of real hate speech. Like to see this backfire right in their faces.

Re: Hispanic media wants FCC to investigate media hate speec

Inez Gonzalez, a spokeswoman for the NHMC, said that those options do not include asking the FCC to reimpose the fairness doctrine, which once required broadcasters to air both sides of controversial issues.
Of course, she wants only their side to be heard!

Unbelievable! So if someone wants our immigration laws (yes, LAWS) enforced it is hate speech which should be silenced. This is just another example of how upside down inside out so many things are in this country.

Preliminary report finds extensive use of hate speech on conservative talk radio
    By Letisia Marquez| 1/28/2009 7:00:00 AM

A UCLA preliminary report on a pilot study has found that the hosts of two conservative talk radio programs extensively used four types of hate speech against foreign nationals and racial, ethnic and religious minorities.

In addition to showing the prevalence of hate speech on conservative talk radio, the study, conducted by the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center, aims to establish a sound methodology for future research on the nature and extent of such language in the media. The National Hispanic Media Coalition is the center's partner on the study.

Center director Chon Noriega, a UCLA professor of cinema and media studies, and Francisco Javier Iribarren, the center's assistant director, said they chose conservative talk radio because research has shown that it accounts for 91 percent of total weekday talk radio programming.

The UCLA researchers documented instances of hate speech on two radio programs — "The Savage Nation," a national show, and "The John and Ken Show," a Los Angeles–based program. The final report, which also will analyze "The Lou Dobbs Show," will be released in May.

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration has defined hate speech as either "words that threaten to incite 'imminent unlawful action,' which may be criminalized without violating the First Amendment" or "speech that creates a climate of hate or prejudice, which may in turn foster the commission of hate crimes."

"Using this definition of hate speech, the study found 334 instances of hate speech in just 80 minutes of programming," Noriega said. "These statements were then separated into four different types of hate speech."

The four types of hate speech are: dehumanizing metaphors, flawed argumentation, divisive language and false statements.

Five UCLA undergraduate and graduate students examined transcripts of one 40-minute, uninterrupted segment from each of the two programs, which aired in July 2008.

    The study found that:

Dehumanizing metaphors were used in 185 statements. Such metaphors evoked warfare, heroism, enemies, biblical characters, criminality, persecution and other representations.
There were 77 instances of flawed argumentation, including ad hominem statements, guilt by association, and hidden assumptions or missing premises.
Divisive language was used in 79 instances, in which individuals were presented in an "us versus them" framework as either supporting or opposing the show's worldview.
33 false statements were used to validate the hosts' points and to promote public opinion. A false statement is a simple falsehood, exaggerated statement or decontextualized fact that renders a statement misleading.

As an example, "The John and Ken Show" aired this statement concerning the city of San Francisco's "sancturary policy" for undocumented immigrants: "And this all under the Gavin Newsom policy in San Francisco of letting underage illegal alien criminals loose."

Researchers said that the statement used false facts. The sanctuary policy preceded San Francisco Mayor Newsom's tenure and neither Newsom nor the sanctuary policy supports "letting underage illegal alien criminals loose."

It also used flawed argumentation. Guilt by association was used to make the hosts' points, researchers noted. Undocumented youth and those who are perceived as their endorsers at the institutional level are stigmatized by being associated with criminality, they said.

The statement also used divisive language. Researchers said that undocumented youth and their perceived supporters — Newsom and the sanctuary policy — were depicted as a threat to San Francisco citizens, setting up an "us versus them" opposition.

The study was supported in part by a grant from the Social Science Research Council's Necessary Knowledge for a Democratic Public Sphere program, with funds provided by the Ford Foundation.

Ground-breaking Study on Hate Speech to be Revealed

Press Conference in Washington set to discuss role of Media in hate speech and hate crimes

WASHINGTON, Jan. 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC), one of the country's foremost Latino media advocacy and civil rights organizations, announced today that it will host a press conference in Washington, D.C. on January 28th at the National Press Club to discuss three important elements related to hate speech in the media. Alex Nogales, President & CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition will lead the press conference scheduled to begin at 9:30am in the Zenger Room at the National Press Club located at 529 14th Street NW, Washington, D.C. "We are very respectful of the first amendment and free speech, but the hateful rhetoric, particularly against the immigrant minority communities, espoused by irresponsible TV and radio talk show hosts on American airwaves needs to be addressed and today we will present a three-prong strategy to do so," explained Nogales.

First, the NHMC will present preliminary findings of a pilot study to quantify hate speech in commercial talk radio by the UCLA/Chicano Studies Research Center (CSRC). The UCLA/CSRC is the premiere Chicano research institution in the nation, generating and overseeing major research projects that follow the highest scientific standards and is headed by Chon Noriega, CSRC Director and also Professor in the UCLA Department of Film, Television and Digital Media. The preliminary research suggests that there are four different types of hate speech directed at vulnerable groups and social institutions perceived to be in collusion with them. "The goal of this pilot study is to develop a sound, replicable methodology using the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) definition of hate speech in order to scientifically quantify hate speech in commercial talk radio," explained Noriega. "We see this effort as establishing a scientific methodology and baseline for larger studies dealing with hate speech in the media."

The NHMC will then present a petition for inquiry into hate speech directed to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), drafted on NHMC's behalf by the Institute for Public Representation (IPR). IPR is a public interest law firm and clinical education program at Georgetown Law in Washington, D.C. It has been collaborating with NHMC and other civil rights groups to address the issue of hate speech while simultaneously respecting First Amendment freedoms. The IPR has undertaken extensive factual and legal research and will file the petition on January 28th, 2009. "We are asking the FCC to open an inquiry to raise public awareness, to collect information about the extent and effect of hate speech, and to explore options for countervailing or reducing the negative impacts of such speech," explained Jessica Gonzalez, an attorney at IPR.

Finally, the NHMC will officially request that the Secretary of Commerce, or in the alternative, Congress, direct the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) to update its 1993 report entitled: "The Role of Telecommunications in Hate Crime." The NHMC anticipates that an updated NTIA report using scientific methodologies will determine that there are in fact causal relationships between hate speech on radio and TV and violence against vulnerable groups.

The National Hispanic Media Coalition is a non-profit, media advocacy organization established in 1986 in Los Angeles, California. With statewide chapters across the country, the NHMC works to improve the image of American Latinos as portrayed by the media, increase the number of American Latinos employed in all facets of the media industry, and to advocate for media and telecommunications policies that benefit the American Latino community.
