More evidence of the push to register Hispanics to vote. Hey - if they're legal but if they're not that just very very wrong!

Hispanic students plan voter registration drive

Calling for new voices in Dallas politics, Hispanic student leaders are planning a mass voter registration drive instead of another school walkout next month.

Three days after hundreds of thousands of people marched through downtown Dallas to support rights for illegal immigrants, the students met Wednesday in a school auditorium to keep momentum and the public spotlight.

But they asked their fellow classmates not to leave school May 1, the day of a planned nationwide work stoppage and economic boycott. Instead, they will host an after-school rally and voter registration drive at Oak Cliff's Kiest Park and other locations.

Next week, Dallas County elections officials will deputize eligible 18-year-old students to register new voters, leaders said.

"What we're asking is for every student to stay in school on May 1," said Dallas student leader Greisa Martinez, a junior at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center.

Voter registration drives – planned to influence early voting for the May 13 Dallas school board elections – will occur May 1 and again at Cinco de Mayo events.

About 50 students turned out to hear the action plan Wednesday at Townview, where students first walked out to protest on March 27. They were joined at the meeting by the superintendent of Dallas schools, march organizers and community leaders.

"We really feel we're going to make a lot of progress through you," said Adelfa Callejo, a lawyer and veteran activist.

Dallas Independent School District Superintendent Michael Hinojosa said he expects students to stay in school in the future.

"I'm very proud of you as students and as leaders," he said.
