SANTO DOMINGO.- The Dominican Foreign Minister today praised the United States Senate’s decision to approve a bill for an Immigration Law, which will allow 7 million undocumented people in that nation to regularize their status and expressed his hope that the House of Representatives would do likewise.

"We are totally satisfied with the decision taken by an ample majority of the Senate of the United States, because it will benefit to thousands of Dominicans and Latin Americans," said Carlos Morales Troncoso.

He said that together with Mexico, the Central American countries and Ecuador, the Dominican Government undertook actions to manage to sensitize the American congressmen in order for them to support the initiative, proposed by that nation’s Senate Judiciary Committee.

He pointed out that last April 15 the senators Arlen Specter and Jeff Sessions, president and member, respectively, of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, visited the country, and met in his residence at La the Romana with president Leonel Fernandez.

"In that occasion the American congressmen promised to reintroduce the proposal so that it was debated again and today it has been seen that it was approved, for reason we thank them for the efforts carried out by these legislators and recognize their battle so that this initiative prospered," said Morales Troncoso.

He argued that despite that the bill’s approval raises a series of requirements so that the undocumented people can regularize their migratory situation, the initiative is positive.

The official added that those requirements respond to the United States’ rights and needs to preserve their security.
