MCSO arrests girl, 6, suspected of illegal immigration

Maricopa County Sheriff Office deputies arrested a 6-year-old suspected illegal immigrant Friday, the day President Barack Obama softened the country's deportation policy toward young illegal immigrants.

The girl was with 15 other people believed to be in the country illegally who were traveling to the Midwest and northeast United States, said Chris Hegstrom, spokesman for the Sheriff's Office.

"She's been turned over to ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) to try to determine where she's from. She told us she's from El Salvador. That's what she told us," he said.

The arrest took place Friday night at an undisclosed location in northern Maricopa County.

"It was part of a human-smuggling investigation that we've been investigating throughout the Valley," Hegstrom said.

The whereabouts of the girl's parents or other caretakers is unknown. All of the people traveling with her claimed to know nothing about the girl.

"Where was she going? What are they going to do with her? We're trying to get to the bottom of this right now," Sheriff Joe Arpaio said.

All of the other suspected illegal immigrants, who claimed to be from Mexico, were booked into jail.

"We enforce the human-smuggling laws here," Arpaio said. "Every chance I can get to take action on my own without turning them over to ICE, I do. Especially with the new policy the president has."

The new policy allows illegal immigrants younger than 30 years old to apply to stay in the United States without being deported for two years. They can apply for a work permit, but still will not have any legal status in the country.

Those illegal immigrants must prove they were younger than 16 when they arrived in the U.S. and have lived here for at least five years. They also must be students, a high-school graduate, have a GED diploma or have been honorably discharged from the military or Coast Guard. Those undocumented immigrants with felony or significant misdemeanor criminal records or who pose a threat to national security or public safety are not eligible.

Arpaio believes there will be an increase in Mexicans entering the United States illegally after hearing Obama's new policy.

"I suspect that this is politics to get the Hispanic vote," Arpaio said. "It's sad to use the kids as a political tool to get a certain segment of our society's vote."

The sheriff said his deputies arresting child suspected of being an illegal immigrant the same day Obama implemented the policy is a coincidence. But if more illegal children enter the country after hearing about the new policy, Arpaio said it may not be by happenstance.

"Are we going to get more of these situations where illegals feel like now they're going to be safe? I don't know," he said.

Regardless of Obama's new policy, Arpaio said his office will continue to enforce human-smuggling laws and he's glad the issue is now at the forefront of the presidential election.

"Maybe somebody will do something about it. I'm glad they're talking about illegal immigration and not just the economy, but I'm not happy with what the president did," he said.

PHOENIX - The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Human Smuggling Unit took into custody 16 illegal immigrants and a 6-year-old child, who were being smuggled by van last night.

According to a news release, the immigrants were on their way to seven different states and had paid between $300 and $3,500 to be smuggled here from Mexico.

Officials say that the 6-year-old child was unaccompanied and claimed to be from El Salvador.

They were found traveling through the northern part of Maricopa County.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio booked the immigrants into his jail and turned over the child to Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.

Over 51,000 suspected illegal immigrants have been arrested and investigated by Sheriff Arpaio and his team and they plan to continue these operations.

Simple immigration quesiton I missed about Obama's immigarnt child policy.

How does it get proven that the kids came "with the parents" vs. were smuggled in later? If the parent paid the smuggler's fee after getting a job here, is that a feloniouis offense and this child and parents be deported immediately?

Without just being straight up the more either side try to "patch" this with additional band-aids the murkier it becomes. Close the border and deport, that way ammericans and aliens know what we are doing!

Arrested 6-year-old now with social services organization

Arrested 6-year-old now with social services organization

A 6-year-old child taken into custody by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office as part of a human-smuggling investigation is under the care of a faith-based social-services organization, the El Salvador Consulate said.

The child, whose name has not been released, was picked up on Friday by deputies along with 16 others suspected of being in the country illegally. The child was unaccompanied and others in the group claimed to know nothing about her, sheriff's officials said.

Officials initially believed the girl was from El Salvador, based on her statements to deputies. Sheriff's officials transferred custody of the girl to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

José Joaquin Chacon,El Salvador's consulate general in Phoenix, said an investigation found the child was not from El Salvador, but Mexico.

Chacon said consulate officials inquiring into the child's origin found she was in the care of a faith-based social-services group. Officials from the organization said that without a name, she was not able to confirm the girl was in her group's care.

Socorro Cordova, a spokeswoman for the consul general of Mexico, was not able to confirm the girl's current location.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, released a statement saying only that the child was handed over to the Office of Refugee Resettlement under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Kenneth Wolfe, a spokesman for the Office of Refugee Resettlement, would not comment on the case.

Cordova said that sometimes official are not able to locate the family of youths taken into custody. In those cases, the child is put up for adoption after about six months.

ICE officials say that so far in fiscal 2012, they have transferred 1,636 unaccompanied and undocumented minors to the Office of Refugee Resettlement. That number was 1,736 in fiscal 2011.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said deputies do see cases like this from time to time.

"I think out of all of them, I think this is the most disturbing, one, because of the circumstances that (there was) no idea where she was going," he said. "Nobody will take ownership of her. I always think, 'Could she have been kidnapped?' I don't know what the motive was to bring her into the United States."

He said that in a typical case, the child is on his or her way to parents who sent for her. This seemed to be a different matter as no one claimed to know where the child was headed, Arpaio said
