GA: Illegal immigrants take taxis to avoid deportation

Illegal immigrants take taxis to avoid deportation

    BBC News
    March 7, 2012

At sunrise in Gainsville, brightly coloured taxis arrive one after another outside the gates of a chicken processing plant. It's not exactly Manhattan at rush hour but the roads of this small Georgia town, with a population approximately 35,000, are full of taxis.

The thriving taxi businesses are an unexpected consequence of a tough illegal immigration law which has been in effect in Gainsville for several years and is similar to controversial legislation passed in other southern US states.

Police have the power to ask a driver about their immigration status even if they are stopped for a minor traffic violation. Many illegal immigrant workers, fearful that a speeding ticket could turn into deportation, now use taxis for everything from commuting, to work, to grocery shopping.

Supporters of the law say that legal residents have nothing to worry about and point to the fact that many illegal workers are now choosing to leave and "self-deport".

But critics call it a civil rights issue and warn it stokes a climate of fear and division. Ironically, all eight of the cab companies in Gainsville are operated by Hispanics.

The BBC spent a day with two "Taxistas" to get the word from the street about how their business and community has been affected.

So even by trying to stay out of the spotlight they DO NOT support American business. The OBL'ers are all the time shouting about how much illegals pump into the economy... but the truth is they only support Hispanic businesses!

And as for " a climate of fear and division" they should live in fear, they're criminals in everything they do here!

If it's common knowledge that this company is employing illegals where the hell is ICE? Where is the IRS?

And what about the folks driving those taxis? What is their immigration status?

I guess you can never tell but they have to be legal to get a driver's license. And if I'm not mistaken part of their new law will ban illegals from having a business license.
