WATSONVILLE, Calif. -- Homeless encampments along the Pajaro River in Watsonville are being cleared out and cleaned up.

It's part of an annual sweep led by the Watsonville Police Department and the Department of Public Works, which includes coordination with local homeless shelters.

Authorities said the goal of the sweep is to make neighborhoods surrounding the levee safer and cleaner.

Area residents said the homeless cause a lot of problems.

"Not too long ago there was a guy that was stabbed and he was down the street walking with blood everywhere," area resident Veronica Alonzo said.

"If we don't do anything, then they become bigger and bigger, and it could turn into a shantytown if we allowed it to," Watsonville Police Department Capt. Eddie Rodriguez said.

Police said many of those living along the river are migrant workers who come in for seasonal work and don't have a place to live.

Is the term "migrant workers" being substituted for "illegal immigrant" in the above sentence?
