Honduras Citizen Illegally Living in Stamford Sentenced to Federal Prison

A citizen of Honduras last residing illegally in Stamford was sentenced to more than 3 years federal imprisonment for reentering the United States following his initial deportation, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Monday.

According to Acting Attorney for the District of Connecticut Deirdre M. Daly, Mario Mejia, 38, was sentenced to 38 months imprisonment and has never held legal status in the U.S.

In April 2003, he was convicted in Connecticut Superior Court of first-degree assault following an incident outside a Stamford restaurant in July 2002. Mejia was convicted of striking a victim in the head with what witnesses identified as a rock, causing a skull fracture, internal bleeding and other injuries.

Mejia served three years in prison following that incident, then was deported to Honduras in October 2006. Daly said Mejia illegally reentered the U.S. in approximately 2009. He's been detained since March 6, 2013, when he was arrested by Stamford Police on a larceny charge. On July 2, 2013, he pleaded guilty to one count of illegal reentry of a removed alien.
