A former New York Racing Association employee claims she was pressured to issue work credentials for dozens of illegal immigrants employed at the racetracks, and was forced out after refusing to break the law.

Long Islander Patricia Cerda, 43, alleges she was repeatedly asked to verify "legally deficient" or forged paperwork for undocumented workers brought in by horse trainers, owners, vendors and cleaners, so that the workers could be given NYRA ID badges allowing them access to secure areas.

Cerda, who wouldn't approve the shoddy paperwork, claims in a Brooklyn federal lawsuit that there are 60 to 100 illegal aliens working at state racetracks. The married mother of two contends she had no choice but to leave her job of 20 years after her bosses ignored her many complaints.

"The betting public has a right to a fair game," said Cerda's lawyer, John Russo. "NYRA's business is running races and taking bets on those races. If you let just anyone walk around behind the tables in a casino, would you have any confidence that the games were straight?"
The beleaguered NYRA has been under federal monitoring since a 2003 charge of income-tax evasion.
The NYRA declined to comment on the pending litigation.

You would win that bet swatchick! I just left Gulfstream and am heading for Kentucky. I know there are many many illegals working in the barns, I also know the Trainers who employ them are aware of their immigration status.

NYRA has been in trouble for the last 5 years minimum. I work the Saratoga meet and have seen some terrible things. I refuse to work Belmont unless someone takes me there, NYC makes me nervous ditto for Long Island.

I know for a fact murders and rapes have occured in the "dorms" for stable hands at Saratoga. 99% of the grooms, hotwalkers and stable hands are illegal. As a matter of fact this holds true for ALL the tracks I work on the East Coast, Canada included.

Are you kidding me

This is happening everywhere

The biggest supermarket chain in this country does this every day

And they get away with it

Yet nobody even cares

Unfortunately I have first hand knowledge! The truth of the matter is that you rarely hear English in most of the barns, and a woman alone on the backstretch is a woman asking for trouble. I always have a male escort.

Sorry Steve, Keeneland's meet is usually too short for me to get there to work. I had clients I had to take care of after the Florida Derby, most of them are moving directly to Churchill Downs...LOL! I sometimes can make the fall meet though, I love Keeneland it's so beautiful. If I make the fall meet I'll be sure to let you know before hand, maybe I can introduce you to racing in person!

Nomas: Too bad I didn't know that you were at Gulf Stream. Many times I have dropped mail off at the post office across the street from Gulf Stream. It is about a 10 minute drive from my place.

Duckman I'll be in Louisville in the next day or two. I stopped to visit my Mom in Fl ( plus the traffic gettin out of Hallandale made where she lives a good stopping point).
