    Police: Man Stabbed Mom,Child

    Published : Monday, 08 Jun 2009, 12:23 PM CDT

DALLAS - A 25-year-old man is accused of fatally stabbing his sister-in-law and injuring her child.

According to police, Edgar Murga killed Alma Arenas-Perez and wounded her 6-year-old daughter at her Oak Cliff home on Sunday.

The woman's husband found her body when he returned home from a family gathering, police said.

The girl was treated for stab wounds, but was not seriously hurt. A 2-year-old was also inside the house, but was unharmed.

Police said the girl led them to Murga.

They are still trying to determine a motive for the crime.

Where in this story does it identify the suspect as an illegal alien? Are we assuming he's illegal because he has an Hispanic name?

Stabbed girl helped detectives, crucial to investigation, Dallas police say

    Murga

The girl who was stabbed early Sunday in East Oak Cliff while her mother was stabbed to death is recovering and has helped detectives in their investigation, Dallas police said Monday.

The girl, 6, was wounded in the neck. Police say her mother, Alma Arenas-Perez, 32, was killed by her brother-in-law, a 25-year-old illegal immigrant named Edgar Murga (upper right), who was arrested later Sunday.

Read on for a Q&A with the homicide lieutenant about the case.

These are excerpts from a Q&A with homicide Lt. Craig Miller at a news conference this afternoon.

    What was the motive?

There'd been a great deal of drinking that had taken place the night before. We're trying to determine whether or not that may or may not have played a role in what took place, but we do know that the lady who's deceased went home because she did not want to drink; she did not want to be involved in that environment, and she went home to get away from it. What took place after she arrived in the early evening, 7 or 8 o'clock at night, and before 8 in the morning, we're still actually trying to piece together the timeline of when things may have happened...Right now we really don't know what the motive is, but we hope as the interviews continue, and we interrogate other people, that we can get more information."
    How is the girl doing?

Well, she's in a great deal of pain. We know that. She's been very brave throughout this ordeal, and it's just been unbelievably trying on her, both emotionally and the physical injuries...But without her assistance there's no way we could have gotten to the point where we are in this investigation.
    How did she help?

She certainly was conscious when the police arrived, and upon arrival relayed some information to family members, who in turn relayed that information to us. And through the investigative process, she's spoken with other people about what transpired during those horrifying moments for her, what she experienced and what she observed.

Please go easy on us Texans MW. Fedup's post is from the local TV news station and often they will say in the televised report that it is an illegal alien, but not in the text copy. Guess that's one way of covering it up. I've experienced that many times and sometimes you have to wait a day before the paper prints it.

I understand, Dixie. However, I have seen some stories posted in the past that were posted simply because it appeared that the suspect was an illegal.

This is nothing personal against Fedup because I know he (or she) has been around for a good while and would never start a thread based on assumption. Actually Fedup does a fantastic job of posting. It's probably like you said, the status was reported on the radio or in the news but it wasn't in print. Nonetheless, that's something the rest of us don't know. If I may, I'd suggest the poster just make a comment concerning the suspects legal status and where it was heard as a follow up to the story.

Sorry if I was too hard on you, Fedup (nothing personal).
