Border Patrol detains 9 after chase ends in Eastlake
UNION-TRIBUNE 3:19 p.m. June 8, 2009
CHULA VISTA – Border Patrol agents detained seven illegal immigrants and two possible smugglers following a 10-minute chase Monday morning that ended in a crash in Eastlake, according to an agency spokesman.
Acting on a tip, agents spotted a white Chevrolet van near the Otay Mesa Port of Entry about 7:30 a.m. and followed it onto northbound state Route 125. Agents tried to stop the vehicle, which sped away, said Agent Jason Rodgers.
The van, with signs indicating it belonged to a business, exited on Telegraph Canyon Road. Agents stopped chasing the van, which was then followed by a helicopter, Rodgers said.
Moments later, the van crashed at the intersection of Eastlake Parkway and Clubhouse Drive and agents moved in and took the occupants into custody, the spokesman said. No one was injured.
In addition to the seven illegal immigrants, two people were taken into custody on suspicion of smuggling, the spokesman said.
